We're off to Truro from Paddington on Thursday. Can anyone tell me if there are power supplies to power up my laptop in standard carriages. Would appreciate some info.
Thanks,
Energyman

First why ask your question in this thread it doesn't seem to have much to do with the rest of the thread? :|

Secondly I would guess the answer is yes I'm not sure if they will have power points at every seat but they will almost certainly have them at every table (with 2 at each table).

No problem, we were all new to this once upon a time! :)

This query would have been fine in the NR General Discussion forum I would have thought and for future reference if you want to start a new thread then just click the new thread button (found just above the top post in a forum on the left hand side).

there is one powerpoint in the middle of the seats in front of you just above the floor if you are sitting in an airline seat or if you are at a table then there are two at the side of the table.

With the points at the table though, I'd watch out with the type of lead / plug you have - the lead for my laptop has problems fitting there due to the height between the socket and the table top. It's still possible to do though, but just be aware! (I guess you could ask the people in the seat behind you very nicely if you could use theirs with the lead going under the seat...)

One assumes the 240v feed is on a single circuit.

So I'm puzzled by the sign affixed to the outlet under the luggage stowage facility stating that it is not for use by the general public and claiming that the current is "variable" and that "damage" can occur to appliances attached to it?

There is one feed for 240V but the feed that is given to the general public is fed through a surge protector, hence limiting you to chargers under usually 3A, the non-public sockets are juiced up to full level for operating the boilers and heaters on catering trollies.

At a guess anyway...

Anything coming direct from a generator is very very dirty in terms of power supply...

The power is provided from the traction unit, either from the generator or via taps in the secondary winding of the transformer.

Because there is no overload/surge protection, it is possible for any sensitive equipment to be damaged if the socket is used. In any case the whole purpose of the socket in the luggage area is purely to provide a supply for portable train cleaning equipment. It is not intended for public use.
