Potters of Ely

Has anyone seen any freight activity here recently? It's one of few rail connected sites in the country that caters for wagonload traffic and was busy a few years ago but seems to be very quiet now. Have Potters given up on rail traffic at this site ?

I think it still handles aggregates traffic, but not 100% certain about that.

EDIT: realtimetrains shows some trains from/to Peak Forest Cemex - use 'Ely Mlf Papworth Sidings' as the location if you want to check.

There seems to be quite a bit of traffic in and out, I've seen quite a bit of aggregate traffic there.

Almost daily Aggregates and until recently some building blocks on the arse end of this flow. Apart from that it is pretty quiet. Only 5 years ago there was container traffic too but this was very short lived. Nice to see the pilots are in use.

So much has been lost in that part of the world in the last 30 years. I remember there being railfreight terminals at Whittlesea and Cambridge. I seem to remember the Potters terminal handling paper products but I might be wrong there!

Only 5 years ago there was container traffic too but this was very short lived. Nice to see the pilots are in use.

At one time it had a regular EWS container working from Southampton (used to see it pass through Cambridge around lunchtime) - usually quite a short train hauled by a 67(!) so I'm not surprised it didn't last long.

Also the Potter terminal handled Rover cars for local distribution for a while.

The run-round loop & hard stand where provided for what turned out to be a short lived container flow. Recently the yard has been tidied up & the car unloading wagon has moved.

Thanks for the replies. I remember passing by about 10 years ago and it was full of wagonload freight. Presumbly this has disappeared. Sadly when I went past about a month ago the sidings and depot appeared to be empty.

It normally is empty, as above there is workings from there, but what comes in terms of wagons goes again on the return service

In terms of the tidy up I have heard that NR asked them to cut the trees back about a year ago or else NR would cut them back and send Potters the bill so Potters just chopped them down, dont know how accurate that info is but by them chopping the trees points to it being correct
