Posts Being Automatically Merged Together

Today I posted an important update on a thread on here. It was hard for me to reach out for support again and I really need support at the moment. It also took me a long time to type.

The post was automatically merged with a post I had made Monday (6 days ago). So of course the thread doesn’t come back up to the top and hardly anyone will see my update.

Why does the Forums technology do that? If I had made two posts 30 minutes apart I could perhaps understand but not when they are 6 days apart.

I think it is unpredictable. I sometimes see posts by the same person that are separate but immediately consecutive that were only made minutes apart. I have found that my consecutive posts up to twenty four hours apart are usually merged.

It appears to me to happen when the same poster posts in a thread where they are the most recent poster. It is switched off in the Trip Reports forum.

That is what I meant. ‘Fred’ posts in the ‘Cream cakes’ thread and it comes up as post #94 and then a minute later s/he makes post #95 in the same thread. If I post #96 in the same thread and then a minute later write a new post, it will normally be merged with #96, even though I wrote it as a a new post. I generally have to wait twenty-four hours and only then, if nobody else has posted in the thread in the meantime, will it come up as #97.

I can certainly understand why the merge feature exists, but several days is way too long. I'd have it at most 48 hours, at least then said thread shouldn't be that far down a given forum's page.
