Possible Rail Expansion for St Helens

The Green Party are currently rallying for Expansion for Railway in St Helens, the plans are:

New Railway Stations at Carr Mill Dam, Peasley Cross and Sutton Mannor (link is to a photo of how the Carr Mill Dam Station will look like if approved.

The Green Party would like the dis-used Railway Line from St Helens Central to St Helens Central Re-opened

The Green Party want to introduce a local Service that would run Carr Mill - St Helens Central - Peasley Cross - Sutton Mannor - St Helens Junction - Earlstown and finish at Newton - Le - Willows

I really hope the plans go ahead as it would be a welcome boost to St Helens.

I'm all for it. It shouldn't be beyond us to reopen a modest length existing freight line for passenger use.

I dont think the Green's are doing this for Elections mate, they campaigning all the time about different things in St Helens none stop, An example being the Green's spending the last 18 months fighting to get a plot of over grown land cleaned up and in use and today there was Diggers on there making the flat ready to be built on, This is a Party that is out all the time not when Elections are closing in mate

Am I correct in thinking that Wigan to St Helens used to be quadruple track at some time in the past?
The infrastructure suggests that it was and I'm guessing that there were four tracks as far as the now disused line to St Helens Junction.

If this was the case, does anyone know when it was de-quadrified?

i have seen photos 4 Platforms at St Helens Central so it must of had 4 Lines but thats all i know

I would think the Extra Trains can be found when the Class 319's come to Northern as that could Displace the 150 Class to Operate the Service

Ive said it before on here, St Helens to Junction will not get reopened. If all those stations got built it would slow the service down incredibly to the point it puts a minority off.

I don't think it was ever 4-track throughout between St Helens and Wigan.
The solum is too narrow between Gerards Bridge Jn and Carr Mill for more than double track.
There were clearly more tracks east of Carr Mill, but maybe these were goods lines only or for industrial access.
It was originally the Lancashire Union Railway, and there was a freight branch from Bryn to Pemberton.

The Green Party are winning the local people of St Helens over, their last Campaign about the Former St Thomas Square Site has worked and that has helpped to win people over to the Green Party as the Green's are getting a good reputation here

But clearly not a party who have ever had a budget to worry about! Perhaps if they did have one they may end up becoming the the RED party instead!

The line was once four track between Springs Branch and at least Garswood, not sure about beyond there to St Helens though.

No am not a member of the Green Party, am someone who has been watching the party closely for a while and like what i have seen a lot.

Aspirational rail improvements, as those espoused by the smaller political parties, can always be safely campaigned for by those who know that the costs involved will not fall on their somewhat limited hopes of obtaining power where such matters will never fall upon their very own financial shoulders.

Indeed "sound bites" are a wonderful matter that elections of any type can be guaranteed to bring forth. One sees similar aspirations on the "fantasy" threads that do crop up from time to time on some of the sub-forums of this very website...:roll:
