There's also the small issue that the car numbers are also in the 800 series, so you couldn't have a class number where there's car numbers sat atop of it.

Same reason why DVTs don't start at 82001. Since there was a Class 82 Locomotive.

This is silly a different TOPS for different operators why couldn't it just be 802 for bi-modes and 803 for electric it would mean that the fleet is more equal.

There are technical differences between Classes 802, 803, 810 and 805/807. So the distinction is fair enough.

In hindsight it might have been better to adopt the Southern model (everything is an MU) and class every piece of rolling stock into a single series.
These two partially overlapping series seem to cause quite a bit of confusion and I don't think I see an upside.

Avanti confirms class numbers for Hitachi train order

Avanti confirms class numbers for Hitachi train order

Class 805s and ‘807s’ will be the designation for the Intercity Express Trains ordered by Avanti West Coast from Hitachi Rail Europe.

Funded by Rock Rail and ASI in a £350 million deal, the trains are due to enter traffic from 2022. Thirteen five-car bi-mode Class 805s will be delivered (805001-805013), as well as ten seven-car electric Class 807s (807001-807010). They will be built at Hitachi’s Newton Aycliffe facility in the North East.

The ‘807s’ will operate between London Euston, the West Midlands and Liverpool Lime Street, while the ‘805s’ will run from Euston to North Wales. The latter will enable AWC to dispense with its Class 221 Super Voyager fleet.
