I've heard a rumour from an Old Oak Common driver, that due to on going traction motor problems with the 57s, FGW are contemplating whether to replace them with 67s.

At the moment the information above is all I know. Can anyone shed some light on this.

I apologise if a thread like this already exists.

Seems unlikely as they have only just sent 57603 for a re-paint which if they were getting rid of the 57s they wouldn't have done.

whilst saying that 67's are good, are there many spare???

5 on permanent thunderbird duties for East Coast

2 Royal - needed when required

4 on sleeper duties

Are the FSR loco hauled still ongoing or did that stop a while back???

That stopped a whole ago. Don't forget chiltern services, and I saw one working with (or hitching a ride) with a 66 today on the WCML southbound. As well as a royal sat in Wembley.

Yes 2, 67,s per day for Scotrail Fife Circle turns, one does the Powderhall bins during the day. Speculation is one loco turn from May timetable change ?

Will the Banbury run remain? All WSMR sets? Plus the other rake.

By the time the Evergreen 3 is complete Chiltern will need 10 Class 67s. Couldn't they in the long term replace them with DMUs.

In the May Timetable for Chiltern Railways, they running 5 LOCO HAUL diagrams from Moor Street to London and 5 LOCO HAUL Trains from Londdon to Moor Street

It's featured in Rail Express Magazine
Two loco hauled diagrams, making up five departures from each of Moor Street and Marylebone, as opposed to five diagrams for loco hauled stock. AFAIK from memory anyway, I don't have the list of times to hand at the moment.

A Railway magazine which is purchased yesterday stated they will need 10 Class 67s. It clearly said it in Black and white. I am about to return home for 15 minutes and will check the name of the magazine.

Yes that is the case, but not starting from the upcoming May timetable change though, which is the only class 67 requirement I was referring to. Unless the number of loco hauled runs to start in May has been dramatically stepped up recently (apologies if this is the case and I've got it wrong), then the requirement is for two sets working Marylebone to Moor Street, plus the Banbury commuter rake.

There's currently a rake of Wrexham & Shropshire mark 3s at Wabtec Doncaster (including a couple of the blue & grey vinyl branded vehicles which were in use at the start of W&S operations), which I assume are there for future Chiltern developments of some kind.

I will get all the details as I am leaving for home now. I think it means from May 2012 (not sure).
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
It was the May 2011 edition of Railways Illustrated. It says that at least 10 Class 67 locos will be needed when Evergreen 3 complete. In this section it also says that Virgin Trains have not yet returned 5 of their 57/3s to the ROSCO because they could be used by another operator and even to haul 390 054 (11 Car Pendolino). It also says that DRS may buy 6 Class 90s from DBS so when the contract between DBS and ScotRail for locomotives end, DRS can get the contract and use Class 90s for sleeper services. It states that DRS could offer East Coast Class 47s for the Thunderbird contract releasing Class 67s to Chiltern.

Don't believe all that is said in railway magazines, much of that information may well be just a rumour. Its all speculation at the moment, time will tell if anything like this happens or not.

Don't forget the 2 67s are that down for working the WAG express from the end of the year. I take it the current 57 hauled train will swap to a 67 when the second train starts.

Can't see FGW loosing their 57/6s any time soon, as mentioned already 57603 is currently at Loughborough for re-painting, the last loco in the old FGW Green livery. If they did want to swap them for something else would 57/3s not be a wise choice? Virgin have a few in warm storage and it would allow drivers to keep their traction knowledge rather then having to learn a 67.

They go through patches of bad reliability. Usually it just means hiring in a Virgin Class 57/3, which FGW drivers can drive.

In that case seeing as they are available, why not just have them?

I see no reason the sleeper needs 67s.

Does the sleeper really need conventianal locos anyway? HST power cars back to back have been used a few times before, I had kittens one morning waking up and discovering that two power cars were hauling my train!

Would they function fine? I know HST MkIIIs can only work with 43s but can 43s only work with HST MKiiis?

well the train I was on that was rescued by 2 power cars did still have the 57 attached but I cant remember if it was still running. Maybe they would work with generator cars or run as an HST with a power car at each end?

Whilst people like us would enjoy it, I think the 57s sound far easier :)

I think they should use 1 67 and 1 DVT on the 2nd WAG. At least 10 DVTs lying around doing nothing.

HST powercars still give out the wrong type of ETH for conventional carriages. The carriages would have to be converted to the HST type, which could be quite costly.

It was done with the NMT carriages, IIRC some of the NMT carriages are MK2's? Personally I would love to see a 50 or a Western, but I doubt that would ever happen! :D

I mean one 67 for each train. The second train will be 67 & DVT due to a reversal at Chester. The current WAG may well go to 67 haulage with a DVT as well though I've seen no mention of that yet.

Sorry all, gone off topic there.

Would it not be worth while for FGW to give their 57/6s a good going over to try and solve the unreliability that often shows up? Things do seem to have settled down recently with their reliability but it might help things in the long term.
