Possible 310 resue attempt

Okay maybe this should go under the Heritage section but recent attempts on there have been fruitless so here goes.

Basically a group of people including I have been working at saving a class 310 unit or at least half to be paired up with the saved 312 half unit.
A member has took it upon himself to put forward large amount of the money and therefore will be the sole custodian of whatever is purchased.
He is generating his fund via his own model railway website where all profits are put into the 310 fund.
One vehicle has been nearly secured with a second to follow very shortly and another member has offered a home at a new heritage railway center he is setting up in due course.
So at this point you ask what can I do???
well you have a few options.


1.join our yahoo group and help us out in any way in which you can.
2.offer some money towards the purchase of unit and have your say in what happens.
3.Take your fancy at the host of models available at www.mgrmodels.co.uk and start spending your Christmas money if there is a model which you was going to purchase somewhere else anyway.

This actually will make a difference and will help us secure more examples of the class 310 and with the unit purchased and housed the possibilities are endless.

Yes that indeed is the case it will be complex to remove and we know this to a great extent with certain members having spoke to Booths about what is needed to be done to the unit.

So that issue is out the way now we can move onto the matter of the purchase.
We need all the help we can get so If anyone is interesting in raising funds to be put to the fund or even joining the group please let me know.

Leaseco's (IIRC HSBC in this case) won't sell stock containing asbestos to an individual. They will only sell to an established ltd company/railway, which presents a problem.

Buy a gutted unit and OK it may have no asbestos, but it will look just like this and you may as well not bother...!!

Yes indeed the task is mammoth but someones gotta do it and im proud to be one of the people to say that hopefully I will have the privilege of undertaking this arduous task but no offense but rather than realizing that there is a lot of work to be done can anyone actually offer to help us so this isn't a wasted project.

Not forgetting that the bodyshell will have been weakened causing the bodyshell to sag (as stated on wnxx by the man whose company removes the asbestos!).

Am I the only one who finds it odd how things go in circles. I see Alfred Roberts was involved with the Park Royal Class 103 which was moved to Dunstable in 2001, when it was deposited on BRB (Residuay) land without permission. After suffering vandalism, it was subsequently sold by Rail Property Ltd after being regarded as 'abandoned' (see here and here for more background). If this is the same location that a 310 would be located, is there any extra security which would prevent the unit from suffereing the same vandalism in what is described as a 'depressed area?

I clearly see your point and I have emailed Alfred about all of this as it is unclear to even if he offers a site to the group.

Also the main thing I have done is to ask the very man in question who is purchasing the unit what he may have arranged as he is purchasing the unit and must have some intention as to where he would like it to be housed.

I would at this point like to say that at this point in time have be told many many many many times what state the unit will be in so.

We know..........

1. It will be stripped.
2. That it may have structural damage or sag.
3. has been stored for some time so will have rust.

so please although I know you are helping we fully understand what we are committing ourselves to and are heavily discussing these issues.

I'm glad to hear that you realise what is likely to be involved with the unit. There seem to be plenty of people who think that acquiring a piece of rolling stock is hard work, when, in reality, it is relatively easy in comparison to the amount of money and effort required to maintain/restore it over the next, 5, 10 and 20 years.

I'm also pleased to know you're asking questions about the Dunstable site, as the last thing anyone wants is for a vehicle to be secured then wrecked by the local chavs. Hopefully you will get the answers you are looking for!

I find that whilst it is necessary to be realistic, I'm surprised at the negativity on here regarding the possible work involved.

Whilst it is hard it is entriely possible, this year has seen the culmination of a freshly built steam loco, with a boiler manufactured in Germany. Also of note was the return of Earl of Mount Edgcumbe after just under 45 years out of use, 11 of those being dedicated to it's restoration. When they started it looked like this when it arrived at Tyseley.

So whilst I commend the efforts to point out what is involved in this potential project, it needs to be stressed that with the right approach and attitude almost anything is possible.
