On Sunday I travelled on a Hereford to Starbeck Off Peak Return as far as Leeds, where I stopped for the night before resuming the next day, to Starbeck for a meeting. I travelled back yesterday and today, in the same way.

The ticket I used has restriction 8A, which allows any time travel but denies break of journey on the outbound leg (remember that a necessary overnight stay is NOT a break of journey, according to the conditions of carriage). I expected a battle to get out at Leeds, but the barriers let me though.

The next morning, I expected a battle to get back in again on a previous day's ticket which, on the face of it, had expired. Nope - the barriers let me though. I then expected to have a discussion with the guard. Again, no, she knew my ticket was valid for boarding up until 12pm (I explained I'd stayed overnight in Leeds).

On the return, the Leeds gates let me out (I expected this now). They also let me back in this morning, at 5.50am for the 6am HST to Brum. The guard then announced that Off-Peak tickets for stations between Leeds and Bristol were not valid on this train. When he came round though, he knew that Hereford tickets don't have time restrictions.

So - knowledgeable staff and well-programmed gates. Well done Leeds station, Northern and CrossCountry trains. Makes a nice change :)
