I've been looking at fare options for my child who is going to uni in Portsmouth this year, for the visits back home to Reading (RDG). We live close to RDG, Winnersh Triangle (WTI), Twyford (TWY) and Winnersh (WNS).

Off peak return fares with a railcard come up at £29.10 for Portsmouth & Southsea (PMS)-RDG and £31.35 for PMS-TWY, but I discovered PMS-WTI yields a Super off-peak fare for £19.90 which seems like a great deal.

Are there any other potential fare options or ways to reduce the cost further that I could be missing? Why is Super off-peak offered on PMS-WTI but not the others, is it because that route adds a short journey on SWR (RDG-WTI)?

Different fare structure applied by SWR (for Wokingham cluster to Portsmouth cluster) compared to the fare structure applied by GWR (for Reading or Twyford to Portsmouth).

Note the additional restrictions, including at the weekend, on the super-off peak ticket.

The assumption is that you would go via Guildford, so historically nothing to do with GWR. You can go via Basingstoke and Reading and indeed stop/start short there (though you might be challenged?).

in particular, the Evening Out ticket (code SSR but a specific SW product) isn't valid AT ALL on Sundays, and there isn't a Sunday Out version on that route for some reason.

Shorting would be fine as break of journey is allowed, no?

The ticket is a super off-peak return and is very much valid on a Sunday. There's nothing about the tickets that state otherwise. Any site should sell it to you for a journey departing on a Sunday. In fact, Sunday is the only day when the ticket has no time restrictions at all.

Apologies, misunderstood the restriction.
