Portsmouth re-re-resignalling?

Understand that they are hoping to make significant progress over the May bank holiday but there is no definate date for commisioning. Siemens trains dont appear to be doing much better a couple of Portsmouth to Waterloo fast trains this afternoon were formed of 4 car 450s. So much for using 450s to provide more seats!

I understand that the areas rail users groups are threatening legal action against Network Rail and the Train Operators in order to secure compensation for passengers.

So what is actually going on over there? Is there an end-date set?
On the ground there doesnt appear to be anything happening at all.
The service is basically 5 tph to the harbour with the rest turning back at fratton.
Platform 1 is closed at the harbour and 3 and 4 at portsmouth and Ssea (the low level station.
platform 3 at fratton is the down platform with Platform 2 being used for terminating trains.
The main entrance to fratton depot is still out of use with all trains having to enter dapart through Fratton Yard.
The old signalling is chronically unreliable now and the service just tends to collapse for a couple of hours here and there.
Today the new crossing barriers failed at Warblington in the morning peak with only 3 of the barriers coming down. Service was restored by blocking the road with network rail transit vans and then hand signalling trains past the still up barrier!
There is no official date for completion. The temporary service became the permanent timetable at the latest timetable change and the apologising announcements have stopped.
Several local companies are supposed to be seeking compensation from Network Rail for lost business including the ferry companies and local tourist attractions.
In all its a total shambles.

It certainly is taking the ****. My local line was re done in with only 1 week down time, plus a load of sundays before hand

I might post my views somewhere else and wait for them to be copied and pasted onto this site, it should be interesting to watch the person explain that one
i do have some sympathy with this view but i think that network rail should be broken up in to 4? regional companies and fully transferred in to the private sector. I think that network rail was a good interim situation following the railtrack fiasco but its pretty obvious that the network is continuing to deteriorate despite the huge amounts of Government money being sunk in to it and that Network Rail is unable to manage even basic renewal schemes.

Define basic.
I wouldn't say the Portsmouth resignalling project was a simple project. Yes there was previous experience with axle counters following the Bomo installation but the sub contractors were at fault - NR have even stopped using sub contractors for projects such as resignalling.
I dont think that network rail has directly managed any sizeable project since its inception. Despite all the hype it frequently has to resort to contractors to carry out even very low level maintenance on secondary lines as it doesnt have the management skills in its own staff.

Ah - but it wasn't directly installed by any of those firms.

I'll think you'll find that Network Rails involvement was limited to a small contract management team. My mate Frim who works for WS Atkins was certainly one of the signal testers.

Network Rail having announced a definate date of October for commisioning the Portsmouth Area resignalling, there are rumours going around today that this will be deferred until Easter 2008 as there are problems resourcing signalling testers. It really is time the Government started to plan for the break up of Network Rail before its too late!

Might as well abandon the resignalling, by the time it's finished ERTMS could be on it's way.
BTW, Royal Navy personnell perhaps ought not complain too much about their grub, otherwise a famous telly chef will be parachuted in to sort it out, leaving behind a menu of inedible delights such as olive oil deep fried in goats cheese with a crunchy grape seed coating.
