There the loop joins back onto the ECML just before the junction although I doubt that Network Rail would want another flat crossing on the East Coast Mainline.

It would seem more sensible to site the station on a loop south of the ECML then.

The problem with that is that most of the track in the area to the southern side of the ECML is occupied by Craigentinny HST Depot. Head further east and you come to the junction with the line to Newcraighall / Borders Railway, go westwards towards Edinburgh and you come to the end of the HST depot but almost onto the Junction with the (sorry, not sure of the name of the place) ''Leith Binliner Terminal''. There does appear to the correct crossovers to the east end of the loop but not for the west as that goes up to Leith Docks.

Interesting - it took me a while to work out where the area the photo covered was, even though my secondary school was in the picture (or at least the school annexe when I attended it) and also the extension to the Royal British Legion that my dad, who was an architect, designed. I think it has recently been demolished.

I grew up next to Craigentinny depot and often thought how great it would be if there was a station in the area, but realistically, very few people from the main bit of Portobello would switch away from the very regular 26 bus if going into the City centre.

That's not just because of the location of the proposed (and previous) station, but because of the trek out of Waverley station. Direct trains to South Gyle or Edinburgh Park might make it attractive to people working there.

People living directly to the south of the proposed station might use it, but if you go too far south the 44 bus would be the main choice to travel to the City centre.

Just looked on google maps, heading east to see where the Borders railway leaves the ECML. On some of the satellite views, there's what I think is a steam train and single carriage, and also a very truncated East Coast train.

It's an interesting photo,however as pointed out you would need crossings.Also pointed out are the lines from Leith (not that many use it these days) and Baileyfield S&C works as well as making sure you have a path so as not to clash with the Powderhall - Oxwellmains council express (bin trains) and the Edinburgh-London traffic.
Having said so,what are the future plans for Craigentinny as there will be a facility built at Millerhill for DMU's whilst Haymarket takes on EMU's.

Yes,the British Legion building is long gone and retirement flats are now standing on that site.
