Port Arthur?

Probably a dumb question, but what is Port Arthur in relation to something just outside of Euston? Is it a shed? Or just a name for a location?

Or is it another name for the Parkway Tunnel? (Which should be properly referred to as the Park Street tunnel?)

And who or what is Port Arthur? I see no local connection!

I think it's an old name for Dalian in Manchuria, China, but not 100% sure.

that is close to Euston isn't it. Only about 13 hours away by plane! :roll:

I have heard the carriages sheds outside the station called a few strange names but not that one.

Nick name for the lower Park Street tunnel, and the head shunt just to the south.
A lot of things like that got their names from what was in the news when they were built. There was a naval battle at Port Arthur between the Japanese and Russians in 1904, which would be about right as the works at Chalk Farm were done about 1900 to 1905.

I came across this short biography of railwayman back in the 30s:

and he mentions a shed, I was wondering wondering what sheds though as the ones I was thinking are someway from the tunnel.

Turns out (as I'm sure people knew already) there were some sheds below Mornington Street & the Edinboro Castle, as this fantastic model of the 50s layout shows.
