This week I decided to watch the documentary "No Sex Please, We Are Japanese" and "Overpopulated" from the BBC and I got to know better specially the consequences that the loss of population can have on a country's image and economy.

I was even more surprised that Japan has the biggest national debt per capita in the world, most because of the lack of a young population and a huge aged population.

Today the statistics for the year 2012 in Portugal have also been released to the public and they show that in that year the population in Portugal decreased in 17.771 citizens, counting the newborn, the deceased, the immigrants and emigrants. The same tendencies also have been verified, with fewer births and marriages accompanied with a reduction on active population and an increase in elderly population.

Though this is still the beginning, and Japan is way more advanced in its population decline and also having a far bigger past population, it doesn't mean the same consequences can apply, not just to Portugal, but every single developed country facing the same problems.

Now, Japan has many own reasons for its population crisis, one of them being this country a really tight one in what concerns immigration, compared to the much more "used to it" USA and UK, but do you think we are all going in the same path whatever culture, language and laws we have?
