I was traveling on the DLR between Canary Wharf and Stratford and noticed we were held outside Poplar station for a minute even though the platform was clear. Whilst we were waiting a train going towards Canary Wharf left the oposite platform and "appeared" to butt out into our track as it left. Does anyone know if we were waiting because of a width restriction on the entry to Poplar? Are the units too wide to pass there?

There's no width restriction at Poplar, and trains pass each other either side of Poplar heading to West India Quay and All Sains throughout the day.

A train will normally stop just outside of Poplar Platform 2 (heading towards All Saints) if a train has crossed the points from Poplar 2 to head towards Blackwall- if this is the case, the points have to return to "normal" before the train will enter Poplar platform 2, OR if a train has entered into Poplar Depot via the entrance closest to Poplar Depot (South Exit). In this case, the train has to be fully in the depot before the train will move forward into Poplar 2.

Naturally, it all depends on what time of the day you were travelling- at the end of the morning peak, a number of trains either go into Poplar depot, or operate from the South route to Beckton depot, thus crossing from Poplar 2 to go towards Blackwall. Similarly, between the peaks, there will be a number of ECS movements between Poplar and Beckton depots.

Hope this helps :D
