Slightly off topic, but does the site get revenue for just displaying the ads or only if they get clicked on?

Have to say I've never - other than accidentally - clicked on an online ad and I'm sure there are many like me.

Only when clicked.

Some ads will also generate a lot more money than others, which are usually the targeted ones (as against Google just filling an ad slot). Ads work on a bidding system, so if a company really wants to be seen on here, it will bid a higher amount per click - and the highest bid wins.

It's therefore worth clicking on some ads from time to time, but bear in mind that Google is quite clever in determining a genuine click or not.. as well as any attempt to boost revenue by multiple clicks.

Google doesn't reveal all of its methods, and while some will be obvious (hitting F5 to refresh and clicking every add) others won't be - such as seeing if you click any links within an ad page, how long you stay, where you go next etc.

As such, some ad clicks may still not generate any revenue even if you think you're doing the site a favour by clicking on an ad...

To be honest, if some of these adverts are already "infected" with dodgy code that causes a site redirection before you even click on them, I'm certainly not confident enough to actually deliberately click through to any of these adverts. (no smiley).

It depends how the code has infected the page. If it has already run by simply loading the page, the damage is already done.

Something I've spotted while browsing the forum this evening, although I'm not sure if it's connected to the automatict redirection ....

As you can see in the attachment, there is a mysterious red cross above the Google ad, which pushes it down a bit (and chops the bottom off). Also, the link is to a completely different site.

That just means that the 'hot linking' of the image (advert) has failed.

Possibly, but now I've spotted it, I've been looking for it on every page I've looked at.

It is only with that advert (shown in the attachment) that the mysterious red cross appears. The failed "advert/hotlink" is to a totally different site to Google (as shown by the properties in the attachment).

Every other page where the advert renders perfectly, there is no other advert/hotlink available.

Again, I'm not sure if it is related to the problem, but I feel it is worth looking into just in case.

This is the latest one just flashing up for me - every time today. <(

(Probably not worth clicking on said link - it's just the url which may be of use to anyone with good blocking skills!)

Interesting site this one. Has come up as
This Websense category is filtered: Phishing and Other Frauds.

And is a company based in tower 42(old Natwest Tower) whose own website does not appear to exist anymore and has one of the oddest phone numbers and also has its IP address traced to Florida and shares the same IP qith quite a few companies of roughly the same sort of thing.
