Poole to Whitechapel fare advice.

Good afternoon I hope you can help me.

I need to travel from Poole to Whitechapel on 4th December 2012 arriving before 11am.

I will be due to depart Whitechapel around 1pm. I am travelling alone and have a 16-25 railcard.

Please can you help me with the cheapest available price.

Another question is. National Rail Enquiries suggest using the overground to travel through London would I be able to use this ticket to go via the underground as this will be around 35 minutes quicker.

They just suggested the Overground option, I couldn't get an option to use the underground on National Rail Enquiries Site.

The only walk-on through tickets are routed +Any Permitted, which means you may use London Underground services on any reasonable route between Waterloo and Whitechapel since they are both valid interchange stations between National Rail and London Underground services.

I am unable to see anything cheaper than the £37.80 Off-Peak Day Return which is valid subject to these restrictions. The Super Off-Peak Day Return is not appropriate for you as you cannot arrive in London until after midday on that ticket.

You might want to see if it is cheaper buying Advance tickets to/from London Waterloo and then paying separate with Oyster PAYG onwards to Whitechapel.

If you're using walk-up tickets, consider splitting at Woking. 16-25 Railcard prices:

Poole - Woking CDR OFF-PEAK DAY R ANY PERMITTED £21.75
Woking - Whitechapel CDR OFF-PEAK DAY R +ANY PERMITTED £12.00
. (£11.40, but minimum fare applies before 10am)

Total £33.75

Both ticket have code US, so you can't be on a train timed to arrive at Waterloo before 10:00. There are no relevant evening restrictions for departing from Waterloo.

You can take the 07:55 departure from Poole, due into Waterloo at 10:23.

From Waterloo, its actually quicker to take the Jubilee line to Canada Water and then the Overground than it is to go to Embankment and change to the District line. TfL states You can get from Waterloo to Whitechapel in 19 mins, and trains are very frequent on that section of the Overground.

There atualy are SWT AP's to Whitechapel starting a £15.20 but these cheaper ones are unlikely to be available on the first off-peak train to Waterloo. Advances to Waterloo start at £13.20, so I would say a walk-up fare would be better value given the additional flexibility if returning.

If you're willing jump out at Clapham and find another train from there, an Anytime Day return Poole to Brighton Not via London will get you as far as Clapham Junction for £24.75 on a YP.

Oyster for the rest will be £2.05 each way aslong if you have the YP card registered on it. There's plenty of trains between CLJ and Waterloo. You will need to wander up to the gateline in order to touch in, and the same on the way back.
And you will lose a bit of flexibility as the fastest trains from down this way don't tend to stop there, so you may have to change at Basingstoke or Woking.

ETA: Alternatively a paper day travelcard for £5.60 with YP will cover you from Clapham to Whitechapel, and means you can just stay on the same train aslong as it is stopping at Clapham.
ETA2: Just be careful with the above as the travelcard won't be valid till after 10am due to minimum fare rules. So the 7.55 from Poole would be OK, but not the 7.39.

The 07:55 (arr Waterloo 12:23) from Poole does call at Clapham junction, it is however a stopper and the first off peak train for west of Eastleigh.

The off-peak fare would also have been valid on the 07:39 until the 6th of October, but as it now departs 5 mins earlier from Weymouth it is no longer valid.

If you're going to use the Brighton ticket, then I advise you to take the relevant printouts and references to the Routeing Guide as Clapham Jxn is not obviously on a permitted route at a cursory glance.

A shame the OP isn't travelling the week after which would only require a change of train at Clapham Junction.

Yes on all accounts.

As long as the train calls at clapham just show them both set of tickets - I have never seen a guard come round between Clapham and Waterloo, in my experience its rare to see one long after Woking.

All tickets from down here to London allow break of journey so you could go out of Clapham Junction and have a wonder round if you like, not that its very interesting outside.

I'm not sure I'd bother with a CDR, the SDR is only 5p more and would avoid any issues of being valid early in the morning.

I would not use the direct service from Waterloo to Poole on the way back as your combination is arguably not valid due to the service being pick-up only at Clapham Junction and the service calls at nowhere else within the Travelcard zones.

If I were you, I would get a service a few minutes beforehand which is advertised as dropping off at Clapham Junction and change there to save any potential hassle. You are fine in the direction towards Waterloo in the morning to stay on.

It'll be interesting to see if the opening of the East London Line London Overground extension results in the eventual removal of the cross-London marker from tickets like Poole - Whitechapel.
