I am looking to travel to Exeter from Poole to see friends on the 17th August and returning the 19th August. I would prefer to travel by train as I hate coaches. I would like to get there about dinner time and start the return journey about the same time. I am wondering what would be the best route as I know there is a couple available (Dorchester/Westbury, Southampton Central/Salisbury) and also the best prices. Thanks in advance.

You might want to consider the X53 bus which runs between Poole and Exeter bus stations. It looks like you can use a First Day (rover) ticket which is £6.50. Not sure if the X53 bus times would suit....

A Freedom of the Severn & Solent Rover will allow you to go via Salisbury and Westbury or Honiton and allows unlimited travel within its area of validity for and 3 days with in a 7 day period offer 09:00 Mon-Fri and all day at weekends, all for £40.

So what you could do is use 2 days for your trip to Exeter and have a free day out in Weymouth/ Bristol/ Cardiff on the 3 day for example.

But the FoSS won't get you through to Exeter will it? Wouldn't it require single/return journeys beyond Honiton/Tiverton?

Oops forgot about that:

Cheap day singles from Tiverton Parkway to Exeter St David’s £4.40.

Or

Standard day singles are expensive at £8.40 from Axminster.

This arrives Dorchester South 0832, Upwey 0840, Weymouth 0844.

Dorchester South to West is very short & easy but if the OP does not wish to walk there is no need to, as this train originates at Weymouth 0850 and calls Upwey 0855.

Changing at Weymouth is possible, but not advised (I've done it with less time to spare though!) however changing at Upwey is fine, with 15 mins to cross from one platform to another.

That said, there my be additional costs changing at Upwey so perhaps Dorchester is better.
2 x £8.30 Anytime Single Poole - Dorchester South & Dorchester South - Poole
Tickets are issued to Dorchester Stations.

I was going to suggest a SVR from Poole to Thornford, as this is cheaper than 2 x SDS however the previously unrestricted ticket has had an 0833 restriction put on it by FGW (or maybe Wessex did that when they had the franchise).

An SVR from Poole to Yeovil Pen Mill is unrestricted from Poole and valid on the 0850 from Weymouth, priced at £17.80, £1.20 more than 2 x SDS for Poole-Dorchester but it is valid to Upwey & Weymouth so may be worth going for if the OP doesn't wish to walk in Dorchester.

These are good value fares.
