I am planning a largely Polish holiday (with a little Slovakia and Germany thrown in) but lack knowledge as to one or two recommended branch or secondary main lines.

Reasonable scenery would be good (not that expectations are moderately high for most of Poland except in the south) while older rollingstock/'units' would also be pleasing.

I have already included Gdansk - Hel in a proposed itinerary that concentrates on cities with trams, usually a great way to observe an urban area. Poland is spoilt for choice with trams.

What would you suggest? Many thanks!

I liked the line across from Klodzko to Walbrzych, and from Jelenia Gora to Harrochov (CZ) but it may be out of your way.
The Muszyna-Plavec (weekend) border crossing into SK looks good on the map but I've not done it.

I've long wanted to do that. How do you ride one of the boats?

The first two look very interesting. Thank you.

I just went on the website and booked it. Caught the train from Gdansk to Elblag and walked about 30 minutes to where the trip started from. There are trams from the station into town but I had plenty of time. Travelled along the canal up five ’locks’ then caught the coach back to the start which was included in the trip.

I did it independently, but I recall seeing tours advertised from Gdansk if you wish.

Train TLK36106 at 07:00 (also TLK36102 at 15:15) from Kraków Głowny to Jelenia Gora (via Nysa and Kłodzko) takes a pleasant, little-used rural route. Its also operated by some rather vintage ex-DB 614 units.

This would then link in nicely with the suggested trip towards Harrachov...

+1 for Gdansk and Elblag from me too, We did it about 10 years ago, fascinating, stayed a couple fo days in Elblag, went to Malbork castle as a day trip from Gdansktoo. Book here: https://zegluga.com.pl/en/oferta/the-route-through-the-elblag-canal-ostroda-milomlyn/
The only sad thing was that you couldn't hang around to see one of the waterwheels which power the inclined planes*, also it lost time loading lunches for a big party of disabled people so was late at the top and there wasn't time to do the museum or buy food before jumping on the coach back to base.

(*There are lots of videos on YouTube though.)

An improvement on the purely local service I remember from Klodzko - just realised it's at least 15 years ago....

Desna Pustinska (depart 1725 hours) to Harrachov (arrive 1746) appears to be a road coach at present if Google is correct.

That's a separate service that goes to/from Prague. The train leaves at 17:34.

Google doesn't have all Česke Drahy services loaded, though it does have the services that cross over to Sklarzka Poręba Górna loaded, on account of them also being line D61 of Koleje Dolnosląskie once they cross into Poland (and Google does have all of their service info).

I'd recommend using the Můj Vlak app for any journey planning in the Czech Republic as that'll give you a full picture, and warnings of any engineering work.

The DB site gives a basic 2-hourly service on the Harroachov route, with a change there. That seems about right, at least for high season.

You can book the boat in both directions if you like, rather than returning by coach, although I seem to remember having to do it as two separate bookings. I saw the waterwheels by doing a land-based trip the day before -- I got the train to Pasłęk, from where it was a bit more than an hour's brisk walk along a fairly quiet road to reach the canal near the middle one of the 5 inclined planes. There's a path alongside the canal to the top incline, from where it was a similar walk back to the station at Nowa Wieś (one stop south of Pasłęk). Check the timetable, though, as trains aren't that frequent (especially at Nowa Wieś). There may be local buses in the area, but I didn't have much idea how to find out about them.

On the OP's original question, Kraków to Zakopane is quite a scenic journey through the Carpathian foothills; when I was last there in 2016 the stopping train on which I travelled was a communist-era e.m.u., but I don't know whether that's still the case. En route at Chabówka there's a railway museum, with steam excursions in the summer: http://skansenchabowka.pl/ (although I haven't visited it myself).

I don't know whether the OP is interested in narrow gauge lines; this English-language website listing them: https://www.narrowrail.net/poland/ hasn't been updated for several years, but it might be a useful starting point. I think all are now tourist operations (not necessarily steam) rather than public transport. I think the Bieszczady line is meant to be quite scenic, although I haven't been there. As the OP has posted on the Wolsztyn thread I presume they have seen my mention of the Środa line there.

Just across the border in Slovakia, the narrow gauge Tatra Electric Railway is stil part of the public transport network (with modern stock). If you travel from Poland to Slovakia by the bus from Zakopane, instead of staying on the bus to Poprad you can get off at Tatranská Lomnica and transfer to the n.g. railway (or the standard gauge branch that also terminates there).
