I can see how that wouldn't present the ideal image! Still, sacking seems a little harsh. Unless of course by 'sacked' they actually mean simply 'booted out of the gun squad'.

Isn't police misconduct normally 'punished' with retirement on 'medical grounds' followed by living the life of Riley on their gold-plated pensions..? It certainly seems that way...

Only in your head, it would seem. Police 'misconduct' is treated the same as any other form of misconduct in any other job.
