last Friday afternoon, I went to Polesworth and had a mooch on the station. What is happening (or not) there? One train northbound a day, it seems? Why is this and I'm sure it used to be served by many more trains.

Its been like this for some time, ever since the WCML upgrade which meant the footbridge was removed and thus access to the other platform (which ironically has a shelter unlike the live on) was closed.

I took the one train a day there earlier this year (and was that day's only passenger), a very surreal experience! Image shows LNWR 350 249 at Polesworth.

I noted the steppings for the former footbridge and assumed it had been taken out. And there are newer style gantries for OLE. I presume the old ones went when the footbridge was taken out.

The old footbridge didn't fit with the new OLE, and the view was a new one wasn't cost effective as the costs for WCRM were ballooning. Polesworth has other issues such as car parking and the narrow road bridge etc that has been discussed before on here.

Although unlike the slighty pointless Pilning, Polesworth is a sizeable village within walking distance of the station. Pilning village is a good mile from the station along narrow country lanes.

Maybe one day sense will see and more services call there, even with easements allowing passengers to doubleback via Tamworth/Nuneaton

I've been told by several people that its all about funding for an access bridge to the 'up' platform. Network rail wanted to use the road bridge and build a footpath to the platform, the council said it needs a proper footbridge and NR said we're not prepared to pay for any more than a footpath and so nothing happened and we're at the current situation.
Like The Planner said though, the added time would probably cause problems elsewhere with pathing and so the will to re-open it is incredibly low/non-existent now.

Could it be possible to serve Polesworth with a regular service if modifications were made?

Yes normal service is one train per day Mon to Sat Northbound only as the southbound platform is disused as the footbridge was removed some years ago and wasn't considered cost effective putting a new disabled friendly one in so is left with a parliamentary one train a day only. "Because it's...
