Hello fellow travellers

I am planning a long weekend away in Poland and Austria. I want to do lots of PKP and OBB stuff but don’t really know where to start.

Arriving on a Thursday morning into Chopin airport. Leaving on a Monday evening out of Vienna Airport.

I know that on Saturday evening into Sunday morning I’ll be doing EN407 from Warsaw Central to Salzburg HBF.

Other than that I’m very much open to suggestions. I’ll be on PKP and OBB FIP coupons so can go pretty much anywhere.

Cheers in advance
Laurence

Late in 2024, I travelled by rail to a number of Polish cities and in each used their tramways.

You need to reserve a seat on PKP InterCity trains.

Your trip is of limited duration so perhaps you may have time to "do" one other city apart from Warsaw.

Lodz is a smaller city with metre gauge trams.

Wroclaw has an extensive tram network with some very attractive parkside running.

Gdansk may be a bit far away given your constraints but it similarly has a significant tram network.

The Robert Schwandl Urban Rail site has good maps.

Are you open to Polregio as well? If so I recommend you to travel on the line to Hel on a sunny weekend for a beach holiday. It is cheap and popular although it is frequently delayed because it is a single track railway. There is also the PKP Intercity sleeper going there as well if you fancy that and want a whole day there.

I travelled on the Hel line in October 2024 and had no delays whatsover.

The conductors were efficient, staying in the front car with passengers joining at presumably unstaffed intermediate stations visiting them to purchase a ticket.
