The Vitalis local transport app suggests taking the bus 14 from the gare to bus stop Blériot and walking on a main road to the airport.

Can anyone advise if this is safe / paved / feasible? thank you

My sister went to Poitiers last year although she didn't use the station to go anywhere, I think she just got a bus into town where she was staying and she also went to the nearby theme park. I'm pretty sure you can probably walk all the way to/from the airport.

If it's on Google Streetview you might be able to tell from that.

The most direct road is the Rocade Ouest. It is many years since I was in Poitiers, but the Rocade is the ring road and very busy.

Looking at Street View you would be walking along the verge. However there seems to be a reasonable walking route through the estate until you reach the roundabout for the airport - when you would have to cross the twin-track.

I think it is significant that the airport website only talks about access by car :(

There is a pedestrian crossing over Rocade Ouest along the road from the bus stop (Rue Georges Guynemer / Rue Nungesser). Walk to the end of Rue du Vignaud, turning left where it branches into two to reach a pedestrian / cycle track to Rue Hélène Boucher. You should then be able to get to the airport avoiding the roundabout, which appears to be tricky to cross on foot.

https://www.frenchairportguide.com/pis/poitiers-airport-buses.htm says that there are buses directly from the airport to the station, which are timed to connect with the Ryanair flights. It says tickets are €5 from the driver:
The Poitiers Airport buses operate at times which correspond to the Ryanair flight schedules of the airport, and are available from the bus station outside of the arrival area.

Arriving passengers will easily find the bus stop outside of the airport building, and the airport buses depart approximately half an hour after each Ryanair flight arrival. On this bus, passengers can travel to the railway station in the city of Poitiers, from where further bus connections are available, or from where passengers can continue their journey by train.

From Google Streetview, you can walk to the airport from the nearby bus stops for buses from Google Maps but I would only want to do that with a backpack and not a wheeled suitcase. There is a footpath by most of the roads, but sometimes it has a loose asphalt surface and other times it looks overgrown.

Personally, I would get a bus from near the station and walk to the airport, as you can be pretty sure that you are in the right place, and there will be people who you can ask. To get from the airport to to the station, I would either walk all the way, or get a taxi. I don't like waiting at bus stops in the middle of nowhere, unless there is a frequent service or live tracking on an app to tell me that the bus is going to come.

That makes good sense - much more pleasant and safe than the Rocade!
I was concerned about the obviously unpaved section which at first sight looked very unofficial but as you say it is signed and only about 100m long to carry a bag if it's muddy.
