If the cancelled train wasn’t run by EMR then I wouldn’t say it was pointless, more the TOC taking the responsibility of arranging their own replacement transport.

There was an occasion when Avanti arranged RRBs to convey their passengers between Llandudno Junction and Chester even though the possession had been cancelled and TfW had reinstated a normal service. Apparently Avanti have longer planning timescales than TfW.

The railway really cant win with some people can they.
If we had "the railway" then passengers would just be able to catch the next train, without having to worry about which operator is running each train, whether there is ticket acceptance, or who to claim from in the event of a delay.

And we wouldn't end up with buses being provided when there is a perfectly good train service in operation.

That's fine, but it was already pointed out that the next train was only a 2 car. While it may not have been full and standing at that point, it presumably had other stops to make down the line.

Both the 1420 (LNER) and the 1427 (EMR) services were booked to run nonstop from Lincoln->Newark Northgate.

And in general those LNER services from Lincoln are carrying fresh air that even if the EMR was a single 153 it would cope.

Exactly this. Prior to those LNER services running, what did passengers do?

Oh yes, get the EMT services to Newark North Gate. So a bit of a non issue for posters above to suggest the EMR would be overwhelmed.

One would hope that the direct LNER services would generate more custom, otherwise what is the point in running them at all.

I'm just basing my earlier comment on my limited experience at Newark Northgate, and I've seem some quite busy LNER services towards/from Lincoln. Probably two coaches worth if everybody squeezed together.

I've had a look at the origin destination matrix and London is the biggest flow from Lincoln Central, at 317 daily journeys.

If LNER didn't get bus(es) sorted and the EMR unit was overwhelmed then people would also complain!

On the cancelled train there was 83 reserved seats for people commencing there journey at Lincoln, that is not including any on the day walk up fares.

The bus most likely to take vast majority so it don’t make the EMR overcrowded.

also was it going to NNG or Castle? as Castle to NNG on foot is the better part of a mile

No - just Lincoln to Newark, no intermadiate calls

The 2 car was well loaded - a 153 would not have nbeen enough.

There were certainly more than 83 changing off the EMR service - at least two of us had open tickets and did not have reserved seats on the cancelled train.

Or Peterborough - a much more pleasant experience - but yesterday was Sunday so that wouldn;t have been an option.

The EMR services were frequently overwhelmed when they were opderated by 153s. Mid afternoon on a Sunday it was quite busy - may be yesterday was atypical as it is the start of the University term so there would be more people travelling than usual, although Lincoln is a net importer of students, so trains to - not from - that city would have been busier.

Of course in a normal world you don't sell at least 83 tickets then make a decision to cancel a train.

And logically if had plenty of time to hire a bus, could probably have theoretically moved a replacement train from somewhere, even if something else had to be canned at Newark to provide it.

Why was the train cancelled? From where and how long would it take to get a replacement train?
Has it been determined if ticket acceptance was issued on the EMR? If it wasn't then that is why a bus was put on, if it was then it at least gave people an alternative way to travel.
Again this is complaining for the sake of complaining.

We still haven’t been told whether ticket acceptance was in place with EMR. If it wasn’t, as seems likely, there would have been a barrage of complaints on here had no RRB been provided.

I mean you actually need train crew to operate a train, maybe that’s why it was cancelled?

The EMR ran to Northgate
Yes, but often it was best to walk from Castle vice relying on the northgate for the service that started from Northgate due to timings. I had to make the journey many a time! The direct service has induced demand on the route. And the EMR Lincoln to Nottingham via Castle is also often very busy now too. There's been a good amount of passenger growth on the route.

Running a replacement bus even if not strictly needed helps EMR by splitting the loading a bit in case more than originally booked do turn up on the day. Also LNER run a seat guarantee scheme so perhaps this impacts the decision. Guaranteed seat on the bus or chance it on the EMR.

as always with this board: dammed if you do. Dammed if you dont!

It seems sensible to arrange a bus if the only available train was a 153!

It wouldn’t be a 153, EMR do not operate them anymore.
The train would have been a 158 or a 170.
