PlusBus Restrictions at Start Station

At a Northern railway station I asked to purchase a PlusBus. I had previously purchased on-line tickets for an out and back journey.

I showed my out ticket, but the ticket seller wanted to see my return ticket before proceeding to sell me the PlusBus ticket.

Are there restrictions on only being able to purchase a PlusBus ticket valid at your destination rather than valid at your starting station? I have viewed the PlusBus website and this doesn't appear to be a restriction.

If you had a 2-part return ticket, then the outward portion is only valid when presented with the return portion.

The train tickets were Virgin Sale tickets, two singles. Valid for travel a few days later. Out and back same day.

After showing my out ticket, I was asked if I had a ticket to this railway station before the ticket seller would proceed. I was left feeling I would not be able to purchase a PlusBus ticket for the journey from home to the railway station with a train ticket from my origin railway station.

This was the reason for my original posting, which you have all answered above, i.e. I can buy a PlusBus ticket valid in the area of my origin railway station.

If you were due to travel at the time you turned up at the station I can see why you might be asked for the return portion, you might just be buying it to pass on to someone else (not permitted) and seeing as you wouldn't need it before travel in that circumstance (because your train is soon to leave and you are already at the station) it might raise suspicion if you don't have a return ticket. If travel was for another day that reason won't necessarily apply.
