No actually, it won't.
The BS1362 fuses used in BS1363 plugs are rated for a 0.4s blow time on overcurrent. There are many other ways of damaging equipment that a fuse would not prevent, and indeed a common MCB or RCD could not prevent. Such as; over voltage, high low order harmonics, poor power factor and under or over frequency, all easily possible on a train supply that may or may not use a static invertor weather it be in motion or not, but especially the latter.

This.

Until people know how sensitive a device such as a "charger" can be (and quite likely will be) to the electrical supply from an onboard socket not advertised for public use, they should not make a judgment on using it, nor should they actually do so. When they do know, they won't use the socket anyway.

Electrical safety and damage limitation is about far more than a couple of fuses here and there.

Old thread I know, but I'm travelling Sheffield Norwich at the weekend, which will doubtless be a refurbished class 158. Anyone know if these have plug points anywhere on the train?

I've never seen any on an EMT 158, methinks not sadly.

Can anyone shed light on whether the 0659 LM Crewe - Euston will be a /1 or a /2 on Saturday morning? If the latter I may well die.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I have actually done Crewe - Euston on a 350/1, but before they ran via Stoke ... and Northampton. All stations Crewe to Rugby then flat out non-stop to Euston.

Actually quite a good journey, if a little slow.

More spacious than a Pendolino and clearer views!

That's my reasoning for undertaking such a journey too! But... I do have to go via Stoke... at least its fast from Milton Keynes.

If it avoids Northampton then it'll be a /1 doing 110mph.

If you paid £6 for one of their (LM that is) cheap advance singles and then used all the sockets on the train to charge up various phones, camera batteries, laptops etc., would it be possible for the journey to pay for itself ?

No.
I doubt that you could use even a few pence worth of electricity.
The price of electricity varies a bit, the railway industry buys a great deal of electricity and presumably pays a lower price per KWH than a domestic user.
10 pence a KWH might be a resonable estimate.
Therefore a penny would buy 100 watt hours, enough to charge numerous cellphone or camera batteries. You might manage to exceed 100 watt hours by charging several large laptop batteries, but 5 pence is probably about the limit for batteries of a size and weight that a normal person would carry.

Even a 3KW heater which is presumably prohibited would only cost 30 pence an hour. And leaving aside the prohibition, if you DID use a heater on a cold day, it could be argued that the true cost is zero since the carriage is electricly heated anyway and the installed heating should be thermostaticly controlled and less power.

Had best stick with the kettles, microwaves and mowers then.

Unless you're trailing cables everywhere or basically making sure another hazard (e.g. a fire risk) is present, I don't think there are any restrictions on the number of electrical sockets you can use as a passenger paying a fare for one journey, unless staff advise otherwise.

If one were to plug in "high-wattage" microwave ovens into every socket into every First Class coach on a train where multiple such coaches exist but the service is more or less empty (the penultimate train of the day against the regular flow, for example)... well, I suppose you might pay for one of the lower-priced Advances on a very long journey.

I have never heard of a member of staff claiming that the presence of a few dozen large microwave ovens constitutes a "nuisance" - in real life!

However, the theoretical luggage allowance in the NRCoC would not permit such a course of action...

:p

Oh... just had a thought... what if First Class is declassified? ;) You could use a REALLY cheap Advance ticket and presumably still charge up your devices!

Something novel on the plug/socket front would be to set up a small stretch of track and trainset on one of the trains with a table with a socket and run a model of the actual type you are travelling on over it. Am sure it's probably been done before though. Would probably help if four of you got together and reserved the seats around the table though.

Yes, yes, this...

I'm off to buy a Hornby Set of a GC train for my next trip up north.....

Sadly, I am going to have problems on my next trip in a 377's (declassified - I wouldn't pay for it!) First Class... for a start, I don't know if it'll be a train with "passenger-usable" BS1363 sockets, and then there's the minor problem that I'm probably going to have to build a model of the appropriate subclass once I am on board - as I'll only then know which one it is that I'm riding!

;)

May well be the solution to the lack of hot food on TPE services to Scotland!!!

My new favourite sentence!
