They have to be given up if requested, but as with normal tickets if you ask nicely they'll let you keep it. I got one at London Victoria and the gateline staff tried to take it back as I'd technically finished with it.

At Plymouth there's a banner over the barriers requesting that if you are entering the platforms but aren't travelling then make a donation to a charity.

I'm fairly sure it's 30p for the toilet outside the barriers. 10p saving to be had by buying a platform ticket and using the one on the other side...

That's lucky, I've heard stories about the bloke at the barrier letting someone through the barrier for things like the above, then when the person comes back someone else is on duty at the barrier and thinks he or she is attempting to avoid paying for a journey!

SWT are a bit iffy when it comes to platform tickets.

Platform tickets only required where there is a Compulsory Ticket Area in operation, such as most London Overground stations. Anyone else selling them is ripping you off, even if barriers are present.

You are on railway property with no intention of using their services though, so I don't think it unreasonable to ask for a small fee (though I'll take your word that they are not actually required).

Also I'd think it would be a good idea to get one if you're going to be hanging around for a while to avoid trouble trying to leave a barriered station - whilst staff might be happy to let you in without a ticket, if they change over whilst you're on the platform how are the new staff supposed to tell you from someone who's just got off a train without a ticket when you come to leave the station? (apart from by the anorak and thermos *ducks*)

Yes, but most SWT stations aren't technically CTAs so they can get away with stipulating access is at the company's discretion only.

I've always just asked to be let through barriers, and nearly always have been let through. Although I didn't really think of the point about other staff working on duty when coming back through the barriers.

(BTW the Southwark entrance can be used free of charge by Oyster card holders, by touching in as usual (the maximum fare is deducted) at the entrance, and then touching out at the exit (the full fare is then refunded) - or vice-versa to exit)

Passengers can indeed be legitimately charged if they touch in and out of the same station without travelling, as platforms are a compulsory ticket area. The charge is equivalent to the minimum fare possible from the station and works like a platform ticket. It also counts towards the daily price cap hence, on this occasion, why you were only charged 40p.

regarding original thread Southampton Central gateline staff give you a platform ticket for free if you ask for one, which you give back to exit.

Chichester just let you through if you ask. No charge no ticket and the staff later in the day just let you through the gate if you say you have been watching trains.

You're talking at cross purposes here. It is possible to walk through Southwark LU station to get to Waterloo East NR station without being charged for walking through Southwark. It is a special case and I believe it only works if you use both barriers, rather than entering Southwark from the street and exiting again back to the street.

Guildford station has a public right way across the footbridge and when the staff are at the back entrance of the station, they issue footbridge tickets.

There is clearly a notice which says passengers are not allowed to go onto the platforms if they hold a footbridge ticket. So one day I asked a member of staff if they sold platform tickets still. The response was no.

So taken literally it would mean you can't go onto the platform to see anyone off unless you buy a train ticket. Of course I'm sure that's not actually the case. Personally I'd just go onto the platform regardless, if I was seeing someone off.

I agree that train companies are required to make appropriate arrangements for access by people not travelling. But I'm not aware of any requirement for platform tickets to be sold.

Incidentally I have often wondered what happens if you are seeing someone off at WAE and there's an RPI block on.

They are required to let you through. It is not an optional requirement they can drop when it is convenient for them to do so, no matter how much their staff want to pretend that they can.
