Platform tickets

This has been done a few times but nothing recent or specific to Crewe.

I'd imagine Crewe to be the station most at ease with well-behaved enthusiasts and I've spent an evening there before alongside at least a dozen spotters who looked to have no intention whatsoever of boarding a train.

Will the ticket office sell a platform ticket (10p where sold according to National Rail), and if not, will the Avanti barrier staff just let me through, or make me sign in? Or do I buy a £4 off peak return to Alsager and accidentally miss three trains?

Thank you! I rather fancied a platform ticket as a souvenir but this way is almost as good.

I'm wondering what stations if any still go through the theatre of selling a platform ticket, or just wave you through, or wave you away?

You still get people sending letters to stations directly with small amounts enclosed (used to get postal orders or cheques but now just 50p or so) requesting a platform ticket from each ticket machine and a stamped return envelope, particularly when they somehow find out that a new machine has been installed.

Manchester Victoria has a 10p platform ticket valid for 1 hour, you just have to go to the ticket office and ask for it.

Neath has one too. It's just printed on the normal ticket stock.

There is of course the glorious Blackfriars platform ticket which makes the station function effectively as a toll bridge

How interesting! What form does the platform ticket take? A CCST? Do it operate the barriers at both ends?

Never bothered with them, just asked at the barrier.

CCST. Should open the barriers, it's just a normal ticket, just depends on how the gates are set up.
