HI there,

I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any platform screening doors (similar to that found on the London Underground Jubilee Line extension) at any National Rail station throughout the UK including Heathrow Express service or similar?

Cheers

Gatwick Airport's monorail system has it, and the one at Standstead has it IIRC.

Don't think any mainline examples exist due to vast differences in stock length and door position.

Unless we standardise the stock on a line and into a platform, it is difficult to justify. The railways usually perform crowd control outside of the station and move them in rather than let them all pile on the platform as London Underground do.

The Jubilee line only has it to separate the station and tunnel air flow. There's no need for it above ground!

Why is that only a problem on the Jubilee only out of interest?

It's a problem throughout the Underground, but when they designed the Jubilee Line Extension they could implement a solution.

I wouldn't say its too much of a massive problem, I dunno,

It is to do with removing smoke from tunnels using tunnel and extraction fans. The Piccadilly line at Heathrow has a similar system but minus the platform edge doors.

Tell that to the people ("fluffers") who have to scrub the tracks each ends of the tunnel to remove loose hairs and other stuff that gets blown in!

And just how warm are jubilee line stations compared to other one on the network?

Those people were got rid of a long time ago! Hence why there are now regular smoulderings caused by litter blowing into the tunnel.

The Jubilee line extension is cooler than most other lines, the tunnel fans can be turned on in hot conditions to keep the temperature down.

Oh i always thourgh it was to stop suicides.
As well as aiding air flows, it has the handy benefit of reducing litter ending up in the tunnel, plus as you say prevents persons under trains!

Wel, the platform edge doors for the Jubilee line extension were built to stop the air getting near any fires just the King's Cross Fire in 1987.

Mmm - the JLE doors were built to seperate the airflows for three principal reasons 1) keep stations cool 2) keep the "piston effect" to the tunnels only to avoid fuelling fires on station concourses 3) keep the stale air confined within the tunnel along with dust. So yes and no.

Plus Galvanize, it would be hideously expensive to retro-fit all LU stations with PEDs, and I think other than Angel and Mornington Cresent, the JLE has the only stations that were built or significantly rebuilt to allow for the instalment of PEDs.

I'm sure there's people at TfL would love to have the money to fit screen doors to at least all the "tube" lines, but I'm not sure how easy that would be in the "tube" style stations on those lines- most of the stations with them on the Jubilee are "cavern" style- far better for passengers, but it wouldn't be feasible to convert all existing stations to that sort of design.

The subsurface network would suffer from the issue of the multiple stock types.

Not for much longer; the prototypes of the S Stock for the sub-surface lines are ready to be delivered, so we only have another 2 years before there is a uniform fleet across the entire sub-surface network.

The additional problem therefore you have post PEDs installation is when you come to order new stock... They must therefore fit the doors to the same spec.

When will the fleet have been fully replaced though? And aren't the S-Stock units for the Metropolitan 8 cars, whilst the District/Circle/H&C will be getting 7 cars?

Fully replaced within 2 years.

And yes they are, but the cars are of uniform length. The A stock is currently longer than the C stock anyhoo. Platforms on the west circle are much shorter than on the northern and southern sections of the circle.
