A siding behind platform 1 at the north end of the station (originally a bay for the Uttoxeter line, presumably) was refurbished and used as platform 2 during the 1985 Crewe remodelling; for local DMU services to/from Stoke-on-Trent.Stafford has platforms 1,3, 4, 5 & 6 but no platform 2 as this was removed when the station was rebuilt to its present form in 1962.

The last northbound signals before the platforms at Preston, on a full width gantry quite close to the platforms, do have theatre route indicators showing platform numbers. These have all recently been changed to LED types, and this has resolved a long-standing anomaly whereby running from Down Fast into platform 3 had no route indication; now it correctly shows '3'.. . .Quote so, but Preston is subject to an Overall Speed Limit of 35 mph throughout the station area and I would have thought that the last signals before the platform entries were all within scope for "theatre" route indicators, that's all!
. . .If I remember correctly, O.S. Nock's book "Electric Euston To Glasgow", which dealt with the modernisation of the W.C.M.L. signalling, remarked something like "The speed limit through Preston Station is 35 mph and as virtually all trains are timetabled to stop there was no economic reason to remodel the station for higher speeds."
There was another strange (to me) feature on this gantry whereby trains signalled into south-facing bay platforms 3C and 4C only got a 'B' (for Bay) route indication, with nothing to distinguish between the two platforms. Presumably this was allowed on the basis that they are parallel and the same length. I don't know if this has changed with the recent "LEDification". My experience is that the use of 'B' for Bay is quite common, as a warning that though you have a proceed (yellow) aspect you are not running into full length platforms.
Preston's 3C and 4C are much older than Sheffield's 2C mentioned earlier; but older members will remember pre-1985 Crewe with its north end (1A to 4A) and south end (1B to 6B) bay platforms alongside the main through platforms. There was a track diagram in thread https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/crewe-station-pre-1985-remodelling.263856/

? (If the smaller number comes first, it is subtracted, 11 = II = 2).
