Platform Lights

I was very surprised this morning when I went to catch the 06.10 from Askam to Carlisle that the platform lights were off and it was in complete darkness, even though there were maybe 20 people waiting to catch the train.

The lights came on just before the train arrived, after the level crossing had gone down.

Is this normal? I would hate to see (or in fact, hear, not see) anyone stumble off the platform onto the running lines because they couldn't see where they were going.

I think they work on timers at a lot of stations (though I can't speak for Askam)

Maybe the timer just needs changing to take into account the darker mornings?

Maybe they are on movement detectors (and I'm not joking). As everyone is half asleep they still aren't moving enough...

I'm sure that is something the TOC would like to know about.

It may well be they are on a timer which would clearly seem to be insufficient for use.

I saw the lights at Exeter Central switch off at 11pm at night last month.

The Northern Rail Helpdesk (run by ISS) is 0845 0576595, can report things like that there. Most Northern-run stations with lighting will have timers for the last and first trains, but sounds like the timer is set incorrectly here.

Once made the mistake of thinking the lights weren't working at a local station one night only to realise the last train to use it is around 6pm :-x

Three stations on the Cambrian, Abererch, Llandecwyn and Tonfannau have no lights at all. All three are request stops too and only Tonfannau can accomodate more than one set of doors.

I wonder if any of them use part-night photocells? They're quite cunning little blighters that turn the light on for a certain percentage of the night, based on how long the hours of darkness were the previous night.
