platform height

I travelled to Byfleet and New Haw station to-day to visit some friends there. I was amazed at high low the platform is. It was a real stretch for me to both disembark and embark on to the train. Is there a historical reason why the platform there is so low?

It's not a level platform. The country end on the up is much lower than the London end. It's an older concrete extension there and I would guess that the foundations weren't necessarily the best and it has sunk.
