On two days running the platform display at Kendal has shown the train from Windermere delayed. Every minute the display showed the delay had increased by a minute. On one the delay was shown as +18. Then the train arrived virtually on time. What's going on?

Presumably it was expecting a report from somewhere (that indicated the train had arrived at/left a station etc) but it hadn't got it so assumed the train was delayed...!

At Cardiff Central this evening came the announcement at approx 18 09 "Will passengers waiting for the 18 06 to Treherbert please wait for announcements".

The CIS screen and 'Digital Doris' was busy yawping to passengers (or lack of) a while back at Newark Castle
This was after it made a right time departure, similar to the Cardiff example shown. When queried EMT just said "the screen will reset itself once the next train arrives." Disorganised party in a beer making establishment springs to mind!

The older tallow platform do splay s on the Southern network can only display delays of more than 2 minutes in length. So at Haywards Heath with a mix of new an d old display s and you get one saying the train is on time and another saying it's 1 minute late. Of course it usually ends up being 2 minutes late leaving.
I'm never sure whether the departure boards are meant to give the expected arrival time or departure time when a train is delayed. It seems to vary. It's usually the arrival time if coaches are being attached or detached but otherwise varies.

Most if not all CIS systems now work off train describers on the signallers panel/workstation/whatever. If the wrong headcode is input (particularly common with short branch workings) then it can cause the boards to show duff gen as it doesn't know the train has left.
Where there's direct control over the CIS, this can usually be alleviated by instructing the CIS to report the train using TRUST only. If that fails, it can always be cleared off the system manually. Obviously at stations such as Newark, it's controlled automatically from Derby so these things don't get resolved so easily.
