Wow, considering the qualifier of "playing devil's advocate" I didn't expect such vitriol.

Interesting to see who responds and in what way according to their agendas on other threads, just so righteous on these forums aren't we?

Agree to an extent, but don't forget that road safety is primarily (but not completely, of course) in the hands of individual users (i.e. drivers, riders, etc) - i.e. essentially, the vehicles' control is in private individuals' hands and pedestrian access is almost completely unregulated, whereas rail safety, being public transport, is supposed to be far more controlled by the providers. Of course that's not to say that rail users should not take a great deal of personal responsibility for their actions, but the fundamentals are very different.
