Early 90s IIRC. I think some sort of alteration to the approaches to platform 6, and the platform-less through line to Charing Cross, resulted in their being no room for an approach track into platform 7. It might have been through platform 6 lengthening to 12 cars - not really sure now...

When all platforms were lengthened 12 car, or as you say maybe just platform 6, everything shuffled over slightly, so platform 7 (which I believe was a bay platform on the same island as platform 8, couldn't exist anymore. I would guess it will be brought back as a through line in the refurbishment of the station. ;):)

I always thought the old p7 and current UPL (next to p6) were the same thing, or was p7 in the 'low level'?

Yeah, platform 7 was definately at the lower level alongside 8. I seem to remember it being out of use before the through line was built.

Correct. 6 was extended out towards the SC trainshed, which resulted in the through line having to be moved over, which fouled the approach to 7 and resulted in it being taken out of service. It was the mid-90s - but I can't remember exactly when, despite using the station regularly at that time!

The passing line and platform 7 co-existed for many years. The problem came when platforms 1-6 needed to be extended to take 12 car trains. There was little to no room to widen the approach next to platform 1 so everything had to shunt over towards the shed.

Just platforms 1-6 were extended. Platforms 14-16 are still only capable of holding 8 car trains.

Ah, cheers for that. I seem to have erased the through line from memory pre the engineering works.
