Platform 5 type computer based system, excel maybe?

Been years and years since I last wrote down any train numbers and I used to have the Platform 5 books which were great.

I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a good computer based system (Excel spreadsheet or a database maybe?) that they can provide a link to as I'm sure things have moved on now from the days of 'underlining numbers'.

I have an access database of all units (and some locos but not all).
When I have been on a certain unit I make an entry in the database. I could extend it to sightings too.

I don't have it uploaded anywhere but I could upload it you wanted.

I can recommend www.humyo.com for free storage of any file types - it is quite fast and very reliable

It seems to me using the new smart phones/Pdas would be the best option. If someone could develop a program to input numbers into it, perhaps compared to a downloadable database, you can also take pics with these things and video and add that to it, and have it all sorted - a spotters dream. My phone can even read business cards, so its probably possible to point it at a number and have it read that.

Wow that is a dream! It is definitly possible though, just need someone with the knowledge to make it.

Here is my database - Train Database. READ BELOW.
Just a few things.
- I have removed all my sightings / details from the database
- The best way to view the contents of the database is to double click on the "Train (Class)" table. This allows you to view all the classes in the database. Then click on the little plus next to the class number to view all the members of that class.
- There are two tick boxes for "Been On" and "Sighted". If you click the little plus to the left of each train you will be able view / add a new "ride" to that train. This includes where you are coming from / going to and other details.
- There is also an "Operators" table which has all the details of the TOCs.
- Ignor the queries and forms as they are a work in progress at the moment. I am going to try and add a user interface to the database to make it more user friendly.
- Do not redistribute without my permission.

'End of the Line' has a loco fleet status list (available in excel or as a pdf) which is updated periodically and can be downloaded from http://www.wnxx.com/layout/navigation/downloads.htm

I have somewhere all the locos, DMUs and EMUs in excel sheets, basically the same format as platform 5 lists, just with preserved stock and mainline stock. Makes it easier to delete scrapped stock or add new lines for new builds

Thanks for the db. Lots of info in there, looks good....but my fault, I should have said I was mainly interested in Locos rather than DMU/EMUs but I could add them in, only prob. for me is I don't know the latest numbering.

Which makes me wonder if there are still plenty of loco's out there...I really don't want to spend too much time looking at boring old units

The last time I was into this there were so many loco classes active I barely bothered with units at all. I used to see Class 08,09,31,37,47,50,56,58,59,60,86,87,90,91 locos all the time.

Can anyone tell me what's out there now? Also what sheds are still active...I used to go to Doncaster Works quite a bit ... is there still a load of stuff to see 'over the wall'..?

Also Toton used to be great standing on a huge hill with binoculars - tons of stuff in there. Can't remember how to get there though it has been so long

Im in middle of doing a Excel spread sheet ive made a column down with all loco numbers then columns for Date, Depot, Livery, Name and Notes. Useing the Data and Filter commands i can call up any loco depot ect and get a list of say all locos in a Livery or Depot or seen. Im useing info from Rail Express magazine starting from Jan 07. Got a load to type in but im slowly geting there. If youse the Data and Filter commands you can sort any thing.

If by any chance you do add locos to my database I would be great if you could send it me back. I have never really had time to add locos.
There are A LOT of locos out there!
