Talking of ghost platforms, I have not been down there to see it, but what happened to platform 18 at Liverpool st
From the drawings it looks like they skewed 17 across the entry to 18

Platform 17 was widened and lengthened over the entire length of the old P17 track bed. So effectively the old P18 track alignment is still used but now has a platform on both sides, with doors opening on the new P17 side. P18 is still there but now has a fence along the edge. I found a detailed online report with good pictures here:

Thanks for that very interesting. sad to see the end of 18, I have a childhood memory of going to London with my dad in about
1959. On Sundays when they were doing the knitting on the West Anglia line they ran the steamers into platform 16-18 we went to see a Chingford train on 18, They let me have a look onboard the footplate of an N7.. aaaaah the good old days it would be a form filling job to let anyone in the cab now!

Was the decision not to lengthen the platforms southwards purely down to BCR, or are there actual insurmountable engineering challenges from moving the buffer stops south? Looking north from some of those photos the track curvature looks suspiciously like building foundations that would have been straightened out long before the area developed if that were possible, but south I have no idea what's in the way.

I’d suggest insurmountable engineering challenges, otherwise they could have kept platform 18 and the parallel move with the old platforms 16 and 17. There is a rather substantial building in Bishopsgate built above.
