Morning, last couple of weeks there has been a Plasser unit in Brockenhurst (New Forest) sidings & at the weekend another has been there, think the reason there parked up is that there doing track maintenance between Sway & Hinton Admiral at night..
I work part time in Brockenhurst & work near the start of the sidings, My question is why do they run the engine’s all day whilst not in use, is it because they do maintenance on these units ?, they have been running all day but not moving, what sort of maintenance will they do apart from the top up's ?

Only logical reason I can think of is cold weather, better to keep it running than shut it down and try to start it up at night when it will be even colder.

Near where the 3 ridings meet
Oil pressure and temperature may be required to be at operating values as part of the checks.
Even for a working shift after a lengthy run to site they often need to be run up for 15 minutes or so prior to putting tools in the ground
Also need to be worked for oil leaks and probably. for checking on board electronics.
Would doubt the need for running all day.
