Hi does any one know what this is off
I have had it for around 20 years and only just found it in the loft again

I have found a photo of this applied in front of cab door on a freight loco, seems it is Willesden rail freight depot mascot
date around 1980, one day I will learn to do links.

The label in pic #2 indicates it's a mascot for Willesden Depot and that the plate dates from 1989. Believe the animal depicted is a greyhound and the depot plaque is meant to be displayed in a diamond-shaped orientation.

Mcr Warrior is correct, on the pic it is displayed in diamond format, presumably there were left hand and right hand versions

Didn't say that. Could possibly once have been affixed to a locomotive or other rolling stock based at Willesden. Equally so, may never have been affixed to anything. If the dimensions are roughly 18 inches x 18 inches, could perhaps be worth several hundred pounds at auction.

I have looked it up on The Railway Centre and there it says that the logo was put forward for Willesden depot but was not accepted; another source says that some 85 and 86 carried the logo, but this may have been in a different style. Therefore it may be a rarity and worth a bit.

During mid 1987, Arup Group / Roundel Design - I can't recall which - did the design work for Railfreight - a three-tone grey livery & depot plaques. I had a copy of BR's comms brochure, with the (initially proposed) yellow backed loco nameplates. Black became the standard.
If I recall, yellow backed plates only fitted onto 37892 "Ripple Lane" and 50149 "Defiance". 37892's plates were modified to blue background after it appeared in BR's publicity material.

Presumably these are various pics of BR Class 86 electric loco "Lloyds List" number 86502. There is a pic of this unit (with the Willesden depot plaque) parked up at Carlisle station. Doesn't mean the OP plaque is from this particular locomotive of course.

I agree - the OPs plaque looks in pristine condition (no scuffs on the mounting holes); I'd guess it was one from WN's store, that didn't get fitted.
