Hi

A mate and I are visiting the above areas in a few weeks time, our main interest is the Freight in the area and we have planned visits to Barnetby and Doncaster for these.

However, are second aim is to see as many of the NL based Northern units we can, especially the 144's and 153's as well as the EMU's.

Can anyone advise where we can see the 144's and 153's? I have assumed that the EMU's will mainly operate through Leeds, but, do they go anywhere else?

Any information is appreciated.

Cheers

Ian

You'll see the 321/9 and 322 EMUs at Doncaster. You should also see a few 144s around at Doncaster - there's also a 153 that works onto a Scunthorpe to Lincoln working after being the Barton unit the day before, so that passes through Doncaster at around 0900.

If you want to see more units - I think Leeds is your best bet. You'll get the 321s, 322s and 333s there - plus plenty of 144s and the odd 153.

Only maybe a couple of 321/322's at Doncaster throughout the day, they only need a couple at any one time to cover services, though sometimes there's one in the sidings off platform 8 (early mornings especially). Have seen them on Skipton/Ilkley/Bradford services when I've been to Leeds.

Doncaster gets the odd EMT 153 and quite a few 144's, but if you really want to see more of the above then you're better in Leeds.

Sheffield maybe?

144's regularly do the Leeds to Huddersfield and Leeds to Sheffield routes, but undoubtedly Leeds station would be the best place to see the most.
153's I am not sure about. An odd one is attached to some of the Leeds to Carlisle 158's to strengthen them, and they occasionally appear on other routes, but you don't see a lot at Leeds.

The 153s can be a bit widespread. One usually works the Barton on Humber branch, and another can be doing Morecambe - Lancaster; whilst you might expect Newton Heath units on the latter, Neville Hill units also appear. I have seen 153s on the Wakefield - Knottingley service, but this interworks with the Leeds - Knottingley service, and should eventually appear in Leeds every few hours.

All the 333s working on a partcular day should visit Leeds at some time, as units doing Bradord - Skipton, or Bradford - Ilkley also interchange with Leeds services. The non-working units on that day are likely to be on Neville Hill depot, and you may be able to see them from passing trains

Some 144s are likely to be on Sheffield area diagrams to Lincoln, Scunthorpe & Adwick and will not be seen at Leeds on that day.

As my friend , a Northern guard, once said with regard to Northern allocations:

Owt can turn up on owt

There are some exceptions:

Clearly a 321 isn’t going to turn up at Battersby or a 150/155 at Bishop Auckland but the Northern fleet in Lancashire/Yorkshire seems to be almost interchangeable!

I would say head for Leeds, arm yourselves with a West Yorkshire day rover and the world shall be your oyster ( or pacer!)

Thanks everyone for the updated info, we have the vouchers for the Northern £10.00 offer, so we will be out and about the Leeds area on the Saturday, will look at a side move to Sheffield, but, really hoping to catch up with some of the new GBRF's in the Doncaster area.
