This Trip report will probably be light on details and pictures of trains. As you may be aware the primary purpose wasn't transport related. ;)

Every Pentecost, the city of Leipzig hosts the Wave & Gothic Meeting (Wave-Gotik-Treffen - WGT). 20,000 attendees, 200 bands and a side programme of films, readings, exhibitions and theatre all of which takes place at various venues across the city.

So me and 2 friends were Flying from Bristol to Berlin, collecting another friend who'd made his own way out from London, stopping overnight before getting an ICE to Leipzig in the morning.

We had a smooth drive to Bristol Airport and a surprisingly quick bag drop. Once through security we found Bar Zero 9 for some food. I can't say the food was good at all. £4 bought me all of 4 chicken wings!

Shortly after we finished our Flight was called from gate 11. A word to the wise, if your Easyjet flight is booked for an A320 don't pay for seat selection in the last few rows as when we arrived at the gate we found an A319 waiting for us. I assume those who had chosen the last few rows were redistributed around the aircraft.

The flight was pretty standard Easyjet, friendly and professional staff. Basic but comfortable interior.

After landing we cleared passport control, collected our bags and had a pleasant walk along the walkway to Schonefeld Station. VBB day passes were purchased and after a platform alteration we caught the Airport Express into the City. I must say as a passenger the new Talents are a big improvement on the old Double Deck LHCS - ok they are not as interesting, but at least they are cool on hot days! The journey was very stop start, I'm assuming that the Stadtbahn was suffering more congestion then usual following the derailment earlier then the week that blocked the Tiergarten Tunnel

We dropped our bags at the Motel One opposite the Hbf (Highly Recommended) before heading out to get some food in the Hbf - We ate at AsiaGourmet where the food is very good and very cheap too!

One for Techniquest - this very large plate came to about €7 including beer! Who needs BK ;)

We then went for a walk From the HBF to the Brandenburg Gate then along Unter Den Linden to Alexander Platz

Very interesting, and some good photos!

I visited Berlin a few years ago, so it's nice to see it again :)

did you see the Frank O Gehry Sculpture inside the DZ bank on Parizer Platz behind Brandenburg Gate?

Afraid not, we just went for a walk :) Do plan to have a proper visit to Berlin (and not just K17 ;))

(This post has already been eaten once by the forum)

So Day Two saw us up early for Breakfast on the Hotel Patio.

Before we headed over to the Hbf for our ICE to Leipzig. The Tiergarten Tunnel had reopened so we headed deep down to the lower level. But not before some Japanese tourists stopped us to ask if we were a band. Alas no!

Our train was an ICE1, which didn't seem to be as well appointed as I previously recall from the last time I took one (it also didn't compare well with the ICE-T on the return trip)

Now before I continue - do you want me to include an abridged account of the Festival itself?

I returned to the hotel to do makeup and then joined the Wristband Queue of Doom

Tickets are far nicer then UK events! It had a furry texture

90 mins later I had my Wristband
8782807289_affc963bb6_z.jpg

And after buying a Tram pass to last until 8am (after 8am on the Friday the Wristband is your Tram pass for the duration of the festival), I hopped on a Flexity-XXL on line 16 for the short trip to the Bayerische Bahnhof. The Bahnhof closed to trains in 2006 and is being replaced with a new and very delayed underground S-Bahn station, the surviving buildings are now a Micro-Brewery and Restaurant. It's also the venue for the English Speaking Meetup.

8771372411_e242bdd839_c.jpg

Take note Bristol Airport (this was about €8)

8777940858_7eb955e842_c.jpg

We caught the 16 (XXL as usual) back into town and after dropping some stuff at the hotel we were lazy and caught the first thing to come along (I think it was a prototype Leoliner on the 14) to Augustusplatz for the Mortizbastai's opening party. We eventually staggered back in the very early hours!

Nice report and photos.

I was in Berlin the day before the wall came down. There were 'East German' soldiers selling military equipment off wall paper tables, even guns and ammo!:p
