Some nice bars in Hamburg, I went to a great one in St Pauli, Toy Dolls on the Jukebox. I found the Reeperbahn quite tame but I did go there during the day....found a nice Italian Bar nearby though. Plenty of loco haulage to be found and a good local rail system.

I think there is a huge model railway in Hamburg too.....

Whilst price is the number one decider for me, I have happily paid a little extra and gone out of my way just to bag a different plane type or experience a new airline, even to visit different airports

No shame in visiting miniature wonderland, it's very popular over there.

Tip- visit midweek if possible to avoid the crowds and allow more time than you expect-you'll need hours in there to take everything in. You can get food and a beer inside too.

The Germans seem to have loads of respect for engineering be it large or small, try and visit one of their toy shops if you can, amazing places with lots of stuff for kids and ahem bigger kids

Would anyone be able to keep an eye on FlightRadar24 on the flights if I posted the flight numbers/whatever was necessary?

Don't forget to check-in online and print your boarding passes!

I could have tracked the flights for you with the times / flight numbers, but sadly I am away myself on those dates. Guaranteed it will be a Boeing 737-800 though.

Shame the Aer Lingus fare wasn't as attractive, they use ATR-72s on those routes, that's real flying....

You can always use the playback feature on FR24... But Flight times are pretty much the best thing to go by as FlightRadar shows the ICAO* Callsign, whereas public systems show the IATA** flight number

Due to arrive into DUB at 1610 I believe on the Thursday afternoon. Not sure what I'm doing that afternoon yet, envious though as bmi is a required airline.

Looking forward to getting a 737 in soon then, and I've got Aer Lingus lined up for a future Irish adventure, although that may not be until 2013.

starrymarkb: Interesting, I need to look into that option. Dunno what the difference between the callsigns is, I've a lot to learn about aviation. Whether I could use the Playback feature 4 or more days later (won't be likely to get online until after my return), however I'm going to have a look now.

I'm going to show my age now; in the 80's (aged 14 or 15) I flew LHR BFS on a British Midland DC-9-10 and returned on a BA Trident 3B. Earlier still, I flew from Liverpool to the Isle of Man with school on a BA (Cambrian Airways) Vickers Viscount. Also, one of my favourite flights was between Jersey and Guernsey on an Aurigny Trislander.
Moving forward a few years, I have just booked my first A380 flight with SQ.

For anyone here who has a smartphone on the Andriod OS, a good app for planes is Flightradar24. Gives callsigns, aircraft types, squawk codes, etc and is also very useful if you have to pick someone up from an airport as it is dead accurate around 99% of the time, from my experience.

If you want full functionality of the app then you need to pay for it though which is a downside.

I didn't write the app but am a regular user of it.

I've deliberately chosen routes and times to get props instead of jets, which is the first sign apparently. I also try to avoid A320 derivatives if possible, simply because I don't like them and prefer 737s. Otherwise, if there's something different, unusual or old, I'll usually go for that.

So far, 737-200 (lucky), 737-300 (got to know the Easy Jet ones on the Aberdeen route so well that I identified which were the best at a glance), 737-500, 737-600, 767-400ER, 777-200?, 777-300? (have been on two 777s, both transatlantic, second one was longer), A319, A320, A321, BAe-146 (first airliner), EMB-145, Dash-8, Saab-340 and a glider (type unknown, but an old trainer) in which I made my very first flight at 12 years old

Love the idea of pointing the phone towards the sky and it giving you the gen on what it is up there, although I suspect that's a thing you'd only get in the chargeable one. Still, if it's not overly expensive it might be worth getting.

The basic version is free but doesn't have as much functionality as the pro version. The pro version - which is the only app installed that I have ever paid for - normally costs about £2.50 (IIRC) but is being offered for a lower price during March.

I picked up the paid version, am quite impressed (it seems to work better then the free.
