The ONS defines urban areas as been cut off from one-another when there are gaps of more than 200m, which is frankly ridiculous.
If we were to apply a more realistic limit of, say, 800m, what would be the limit of the London urban area? Would it reach all the way to Reading and Southend?
- Having asked this, I'm now going to try to find out.
EDIT: It looks like the definition needs to expand to one mile. 800m would not be enough to join Virginia Water to Ascot, or any of Romford/Brentwood/Billericay/Basildon, but it would bring Southend and Basildon together; a similar allowance would also bring Crawley into London. 800m might just about result in Harlow and St Albans merging with London though.
