Like maybe putting Loops on the Hertford Loop (to get freight services here of the Welwyn Bottleneck), or doubling the line out of SSD Airport (a single track in the middle of a double bore tunnel - yeah stupid isn't it)... some less obvious schemes that really could do with money. Anyone :D :D :D ???

Electrify Wokingham-Ash, Guildford-Redhill, Oxted-Uckfield and Hastings-Ashford. This means that Southern could take over the Reading-Gatwick route and get rid of their small number of DMUs, hence significant cost savings by standardising on an all-electric fleet. The DMUs could go to another operator.

Quadruple Huntingdon-Fletton Jcn and reinstate the down slow Peterborough-Helpston. This simplifies operations, reduces the possibility of a slow train holding up an express and allows for possible station reopenings at Holme or Yaxley to serve any housing developments south of Peterborough.

Electrify Ely-Peterborough and Neville Hill-Colton Jcn. Not only good for diversionary routes, you could have a Leeds-York electric service operated by 333s, and it would contribute towards an all-electric TPX North.

Reopen Soham.

Consider electrifying to Hull, HT could use 90s for a short time until they get new electric units.

Would also allow EC to diagram a IC225 rather than the HST it is currently.

Many of Northerns stations lack anyform of CIS or even a PA system and even where they exist they don't work! For me that would be where I would put some money upgrading those stations.

Also infill electrification as far and wide as possible.

Yep here on the East Lancs line, the unstaffed stations have a shelter, and a PA thats never used even during cancellations. Stupid.

Add Gospel Oak-Barking to the electrification list. Design for full freight use as well as EMUs. It's probably already planned, but let's see

The swing bridge might be a problem, but then the Trowse Bridge has that sliding rail accross the top as a conductor.

Hmm hadn't thought about getting the OHLE across the swing bridge. Then again does it even still work/get used? Still these little bits of the ECML that haven't been wired yet really should be done at some point and having a swing bridge in the way shouldn't be a barrier to that surely.

I know a lot of Northern's stations here in the NE had PA systems but a year or two ago these stopped working and Northern put signs out telling people there was a problem and that it would be fixed soon. I also noticed this at stations in the York/Leeds areas as well. Not sure what the problem was but recently I've noticed some stations have announcements again (such as MetroCentre).

Reopen platform 4 at Westbury, convert platform 2 at Fareham into a through platform and electrify the up and down goods lines from Southampton Central to Redbridge.

Any single-line sections of the Salisbury - Exeter line should be double tracked, Morton-Wool on the SWML should be double tracked, and a couple of passing loops should be installed along the West Coastway line to increase line capacity.

Finally, start a program to incrementally increase line speeds across the country. A good example is the Wessex Main Line where the maximum line speed should be increased to 100mph in places, such as Salisbury - Redbridge Junction.
