I'm frequently tempted to start a thread along the lines of:

"Where would you like trains to go to and how would the timetable look?"

That would be a good thread! Isn't that what the EW Rail planners are trying to answer at the moment?

Anyway, Kibworth on the MML between Leicester and Market Harborough, a rapidly growing small town that lost its original station back in 1968.

Even without the proposed redevelopment of the area a Brent Cross Parkway station on the MML at Staples Corner with direct access to car parks from the M1 and A406 could be the mother of all park and rides as well as serving the shopping centre.

Willesden Junction on the WCML fast lines

On Chiltern Services , theres quite a gap between Marlyebone and Wembley . Maybe a stop at say West Hampstead , would help , as it would give Overground , TL and Underground . if the Met also stopped at WHD , it really would be a brilliant interchange stop

The implication that there is not much in the way of a suburban service along the lines out of Marylebone is misleading. If you consider the two track railway into the platforms at Marylebone as fast lines for express trains then it gives a more realistic picture in my opinion as the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines are quite literally a matter of feet and inches from the Chiltern lines into Marylebone and there are stations dotted at half mile intervals from St John's Wood all the way up to Neasden so It would obliterate capacity to save a small number of people a 500 yard interchange between Baker Street and Marylebone.

I know it was (and almost certainly still is) part of the long term aspirations of the Chiltern franchise to put platforms up at West Hampstead but I can't see it happening any time in the next few decades as it currently strikes me as a prohibitively expensive scheme which will create more problems than it solves.

Cullompton and Edginswell in Devon
Corsham, Wootton Bassett, a "Parkway" station for Devizes, and Lavington station reopened in Wiltshire.

Lavington might seem a bit random compared to the others there, but it's in walking distance of busy Market Lavington and West Lavington villages, one of which houses a large secondary school, and the other, a boarding school, and plenty of young people and elderly people live in the area who (I'd imagine) would use the train and bus links aren't great. The villages themselves are fairly near the other villages of Easterton, Erlestoke, Great and Little Cheverell, Potterne, Coulston, Edington (which itself used to have a station) and Urchfont.

You would probably get a passenger flow travelling between Lavington and Devizes too if the latter had a shuttle bus taking you from the Parkway station into the town centre. Devizes Parkway may also get railway passengers from Marlborough, which also doesn't have a station.

The scheme I would suggest in this scenario is Thorpe Willoughby.

This village is between Selby and South Milford, plenty of land is available around a level crossing, making for a cheap construction. A large car park would attract commuters who currently drive into Selby or to Micklefield, East Garforth or Garforth, and so easy the parking and traffics issues in these settlements. In and of itself Thorpe Willoughby is a village of 3000 but will shortly have a large amount of new housing constructed - I would speculate that a good portion of the cost could be met by developer contributions.

Sefton Park station where the Liverpool spur of the West Coast Mainline crosses Smithdown Road. To be fair it did actually used to exist but was closed just before electrification I believe. 4 tracks so no need to slow everything down behind stoppers, the slow lines are hardly mad busy. Not exactly within a short walking distance of Mossley Hill or Edge Hill. It is also a built up area which is mainly housing with some business and would provide a quicker link to the city centre than the many alternative bus routes going under the railway bridge. It may be on the brink of where the more frequent bus services outway the quicker journey time by train though with a 30 minute frequency.

I align myself with many of this forum's posters who believe that stations can't just be built where there's a line on a map. I accept that there's simply not enough money to build new railway stations and each and every place where a line currently exists, and under no circumstances do I have a set of Crayola pencils to hand.

WITH THAT SAID...

In the spirit of this thread, can I put forward this not-too-serious-but-why-not proposal for Coppull on the WCML between Chorley and Wigan?

Not sure if one's planned for Wilton, but a 4-platform station at the junction between the Wessex & West of England Main Lines (near the Park & Ride) would be a very good shout.

There is already a fairly well developed proposal for a two platform station on the GW route, piggy-backed onto the existing park and ride site. AIUI future expansion to the SW route would be allowed for as a future upgrade.

Self-contradicting!

Your wish-list for the Guildford area would give a metro-style density of stations! Bear in mind how long it took to provide the station at Mitcham Eastfields, which has long been a huge gap in a very densely-populated area. The new station had been suggested for decades, and only came to fruition a few years ago. Its value seems to have been justified by the fact that it sees semi-fast trains from the Epsom corridor stopping there but not at Carshalton, Mitcham Junction, etc.

Sorry i meant to say East Clandon rather than East Horsley in that sentence.

I think these sorts of stations for the Guildford area would be very useful. Lots of them are busy large areas and have busy roads. Unfortunately seeing how long it was before Mitcham Eastfields was built i cant see many of these stations getting built any time soon.

Bit of demolition in the area. As in flatten it. Chiltern platforms on loops, allowing express services to pass. Similar at the Thameslink station- configure it so the fast lines have platforms, but with loops that could allow MML express services to pass. Build a new development incorporating the stations as "West Hampstead Interchange" with a new, wider, high street area, possibly at an elevated level

A "Gateshead Team Valley" station on the East Coast mainline between Newcastle and Chester-le-Street could serve as a hub for the wider Gateshead area as well as access to Team Valley Trading Estate

"Little Shelford"

Would be about as far as the current Shelford (in Great Shelford) is from Cambridge, but giving Shelford and Hauxton access to the Shepreth branch and beyond villages services, as well as improved service into Cambridge from Shelford

Going beyond the brief in the OP, the slow line between LSP and Edge Hill ought really to be incorporated into Merseyrail and given at least a 15 minute frequency. There are many students as well as ordinary commuters who live in that area and the buses can be extremely slow, not just because of traffic, but because of the great crush of passengers joining and leaving.

I think the station at South Wingfield should be reopened (known as Wingfield when it was open). My Mum would use it all the time as she's only a few minutes drive from the site of the original station. I know people will say that Clay Cross would be a better alternative but lets face facts Clay Cross is an absolute hole.

You can't not open a station somewhere because it's a "hole". :D

There are countless stations up and down this land that serve less than desirable places, a lot far worse than the one horse town that is Clay Cross. ;)

I agree that stations can't be just be built everywhere that people think that one could work, which is why with my suggestions I also suggested how they could fit within the existing timetable.

Lancashire County Council seem to be more in favour of Skelmersdale than Midge Hall, though I totally agree that a station should be built there.

Whilst I'd like more local stations, is there the capacity on the Chippenham - Swindon - Didcot route to put in more local trains? As for Corsham, it's after the junction for the west Wiltshire line, so not sure what route it would be on, can't see GWR being happy with HSTs stopping more times

I was aware the proposals existed, but hadn't seen the details before. If it's not too far off-topic for this thread, they claim it'd be useful for a connecting bus to Stonehenge. But wouldn't that be more sensibly be provided from Salisbury, where more trains call?

If I recall correctly, there are long-term plans as part of MetroWest for a Swindon-Bristol stopping service, which would serve Corsham. (well, at least I thought that's what I remembered, but on checking, I can't find any links for it). Presumably that service would also answer the previous queries in this thread about what could stop at Wootton Bassett if that station was built - along with the aspiration to run hourly Swindon-Southampton (Airport, I think) trains as part of an improved TransWilts service also serving Wilton Parkway.

Crosshills and Elland are high up on WY Metro's priority list. I believe the timetable has slack built in for those stations.

A station I know has support, but perhaps nothing like the money required to see it built, is Cottam on the Preston-Blackpool line near the University sports complex. What electrification has done or could do to the possibility of its construction I do not know.

If the curve was reinstated down from the Gateshead end of the King Edward Bridge to Low Fell Yard then the station could be off the main line and closer to the Team Valley.

There is a plan of sorts to have a tram system running from Gateshead (maybe even Newcastle) along the Team Valley with a second branch to the Metrocentre. I'm not sure of the status of this.
