I'm traveling from Pisa to Nice in late august.
Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed.

Sit on the left or stand in the corridor!
Can't speak for Pisa-Genova, but Genova-Nice is a very scenic trip virtually on the sea wall in places - like Dawlish, but 100+ miles of it.
It's just a pity that FS diverted some of the best bits underground when they upgraded the line (eg at San Remo).
There were no cross-border trains when I went in 2013, but you can now avoid the need to rebook onto TER at Ventimiglia by using the through trains.
If you haven't found it, there's a Wiki page on the history of the line:

As usual, bahn.de should be your first stop: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/qu...2&ident=ce.020532240.1436722184&rt=1&OK#focus

The EC (Marseille-)Nice-Genoa-Milan are operated by thello, a joint venture of Trenitalia and Transdev: https://www.thello.com/

To purchase the ticket, the best option is probably Capitaine Train: https://www.capitainetrain.com/search/nice-ville/pisa-centrale/2015-07-20-08:00

Nice 8.49
Ventimiglia 9.33 - 9.54
Genova Brignole 13.08 - 13.20
Le Spezia Centrale 14.59 - 15.15
Pisa 16.25

and

Nice 10.29
Ventimiglia 11.20 - 11.35
Le Spezia Centrale 16.59 - 17.15
Pisa 18.25

No IC; just local trains.

There is also a EC/ES with just 1 change in Genova. These 2 trains are about 2 hours faster than the stopping trains despite a more than 1 hour wait in Genova. (8.09 - 13.55)

Thanks everyone.
Looking forward to the trip!
This will be followed, a couple of days later, by Nice - Toulouse, Toulouse - Tarbes.
Probably not quite as scenic but special in its own way.
