How do they know when to say "This is XXX" and "We will shortly be arriving at XXX"?

Is it GPS? Does it say it at the same point on every journey?

Depends. Some of them are GPS, others operated by other means.

Certainly the third rail and diesel units could not use than pantograph system described.

It's either done on a GPS signal or based on wheel revolutions. Systems based on wheel revolutions can therefore be susceptible to errors when trains are suffering badly from wheelslip. 'This is' announcements are sometimes linked to the doors being released too.

I've never heard of such a method. I've heard of wheel rotations, GPS, and doors being released. But never anything to do with the pantograph.

333s work simply on door release

As far as I knew, it was either GPS or wheel rotations. No way is it based on the position of the pantograph.

The SWT units listed work off GPS signals, I dont know about the 375s.

Except the 458s, it's system is how many times the wheels have turned and door releases to determine where it is. Which is interesting during leaf fall season!

I've never seen it happen on other units but on FGW Turbos where it is based on GPS and door release if the doors are re released at a station it will jump ahead to the next station, and then stay one station ahead until the system is reset.

Same on 378s so I assume all Electrostars, it's GPS based and door release. If we lose GPS signal it comes up as "off route" on the TCMS.

Electrostar works work off GPS or track level beckons.

319's can use GPS but not currently enabled I believe.

If so, I presume it would be the same system as fitted on 317s and some 321s (GA)? That's certainly GPS based, as so nicely demonstrated when the system is not set properly and reads out the stations that have just passed, and the origin as the destination.

Some have automatic announcements (can't remember which ones but was confirmed by people over on Yahoo EMU group) , all have GPS location active.

And if it falls out of sync, eg the train doesn't call at a station for which the PIS has been set then it continues announcing the wrong stations until and if the driver resets it. 450s etc appear to self-correct to an extent, presumably using the GPS.
