I caught the 08:55 Man.Apt. to Cleethorpes as far as Meadowhall earlier today.

It took over half an hour to do Airport to Piccadilly - no scheduled stops. We were stuck at a signal some time. The guard announced an apology with words about congestion at Piccadilly. However, after the delayed departure from Picc going towards Stockport I noticed many trains going the other way at a standstill.

Can anyone tell me if there was more to it?

Delays in reaction to a track circuit failure at Ardwick Jn.

Good news in a way. Another answer could be "bomb scare".

Why does it matter if they have a depot at that exact spot or not?

If they turn up on site in 30 seconds, or 30 minutes doesn't matter if they can't get access/having trouble finding or fixing the fault/fault is because of flooding.

Or even worse, if they are currently being pulled left right and center because of faults elsewhere.

Depending on the track that failed the engineers may need 3 lines blocked to investigate the fault. Sometimes it is quicker to let the trains run, albeit slowly by cautioning them past the signals than blocking the lines.
