It says on the London Underground website that you have to apply for a permit to take pictures and film on the London Underground - does this mean that when i go down to London to go to the British Museum i have to get a permit to take 'tourist/enthusiast' pictures of the tube?

if you mean do you have to ask to take pic's in the museum i dont know, you would have to ask a person who works there, i assume you can

in that case yes and no, depends where you are taking shots if it is just a tube station then yes, but if it share's with nr then no you could go to h&w and take shots of the bakerloo line and no body would bat an eyelid, hop that helps

If the photos are just for you and not being sold on and you dont have any tripods etc with you then YOU DO NOT NEED A PERMIT! Just please make sure that you turn your flash and the little red lihght that sometimes comes on at the front off.

Permits are for commercial photography only.

You can photograph on the tube as long as you don't use flash or tripods and stay in public areas, don't endanger yourself or others and ensure your camera doesn't display a light (red/green/otherwise).

Permits are meant to be for all people, non commercial or commercial, if you have a permit it shuts the BTP up or other folk when they try to question you!

I would have hoped that this subject had been done to death already. From the Q & A section of the TFL website:

Do I need permission to film or take photographs on the tube?

You may take personal photographs on the Tube, but you MUST NOT use flash.

For information on filming or taking professional photographs on the tube, please CLICK HERE [Points at the badly worded film office page]

It's not clear if it's even possible to get a personal permit, but if it is that would certainly help to melt the BTP.

Ive never needed 1 , back in 2005 , 2004 , 2003 , 2004 I went all over the tube and took pics neally every line and I never got asked for a permit!:tongue8:

The point is that although you don't need a permit, it will help to get rid of any misinformed BTP, who occasionally search/arrest photographers on terrorism grounds because they believe photography on the underground to be illegal (more likely they are bored and need a bit of entertainment).

How much this affects you is likely to involve factors such as how many photographs you take, how long you hang around and how big your camera is.
