Phone help please

Hi all.

I was out in Carlisle yesterday and my blackberry 8520 bold got extreamly wet and went to a white screen later on in the day it started to work again but only intermittent now it hardly works at all. I went into 02 and they said if its water damage there is nothing they can do.

So to my question:- i am looking into an i phone 4 or a blackberry torch (not keen on the blackberry but i like the look of it).

Has anyone on here got a i phone 4 or a blackberry torch, if so what are they like, have you ever had any problems and have you ever got them wet in anyway.

Did you take the phone apart and put in a warm place? Works wonders

Best choice would be an Android (the Motorola Defy is known for being tough and water resistant) but of those two the Blackberry simply because it is not an iPhone.


Basically if you want to modify your phone or make calls on your phone then avoid the iPhone 4

It might dry out and start working again. I dropped my phone in a sink, first thing I did was take the battery out and then put the phone in a lunchbox filled with rice. Apparently the rice helps draw the water out, could be a load of twoddle though!

The DEFY is an awesome phone. Dust, scratch and water resistant. I won't say proof as nothing is invincible but I put mine in a sink filled with water and played a movie on it, so water damage won't be an issue!

Rice is a desiccant so I have no trouble in believing it's real.

Not at that price. It'll be just the SIM free phone (unlocked), I suspect the OP already has a short term contract that is much more suitable.

Hi all.

The i phone i have just purchased for £504.99 is 02 pay and go.

The blackberry that went bang was also on 02 pay and go.

I never go on contract because of passed issues but i have allways found 02 to be the best company to go with.

And yes, I have used a BB and Android phone ...

The iPhone is better - yes it has it's issues but what phone doesn't?

It is far more reliable than my BB Storm2 9520 that refused to make calls or send texts 90% of the time .... no such problems with my iPhone 4 ...

Have they sorted out the death grip yet? To test put the phone in the most comfortable position in your hand and check the signal.

It's not relevant for a few months but when the clocks go back do not use it's alarm clock function as the last few times the clocks have changed alarms have failed.

They haven't fixed it but you should buy a case as the front, but more likely the rear, can shatter if you knock it in the wrong (or right?) place.

The iPhone 5 will no doubt change the design to fix it, which we will see in a couple of months.

Never had this problem, but like any sensible person who doesn't have money to replace a damaged phone, I put it in a case. Even when I didn't have a case it didn't happen.

I've had my iPhone 4 for almost a year now, and I've had no problems. I bought a case when I picked it up from the shop, and that stops the signal issues and protects the phone. When you're at home, I'd turn off the 3G and use your Wi-Fi as that extends the battery life. Doing that I only need to charge my phone 2-3 times a week, which I think is quite reasonable.

One final point, I've got several friends who have Blackberrys - most of them have had to send the phones away for repair at least once, some up to 3 times! I think you made the right choice Simon.

Hi all.

Right a quick review of the iphone 4 for anyone who is going to get one.

Downsides:-

DO NOT BUY if:-

You do not have a computer (everything has to be synced with itunes on your computer).

You want to bluetooth photos and ringtones from 1 phone to another, the iphone is not able of bluetoothing anything, it can only link with a headset.

You actually want to use the phone during the day , unless you have a spare battery (which i now do) your phone will not last after 1pm, if you unplug it from charge at 9am , the battery is absolutely crap.

You want a good signal to phone someone , i have found that the signal on my iphone is crap even when not touching it, i put my blackberry and iphone next to each other and the iphone had 2 bar signal and the blackberry had 5 bar signal big difference.

Upsides:-

If you have a computer.

Want everything at your finger tips ( it used to take me up to 2 hours to load premier inn internet site on my blackberry, there is an app for it on the iphone it takes me 2 mins to book a hotel now).

Want to know exactly where you are and whats round you (there are apps for burger king, mc donnalds, dominos pizza anything you can imagine, the iphone has built in GPS so when you open maps it shows you exactly where you are. (maps is google maps)

Want excellent internet (the internet loads faster than the blackberrys and i can search anything i want.

An excellent camera 5 mega pixel, it is like looking at the pic with your own eyes the screen is so clear its amazing.

want to watch vids on youtube (aslong as the member who uploaded the vid lets them be played on iphones which not many do).

Want to connect to facebook ,the facebook app gives you everything you get on the internet page.

So to sum it up if you want a phone that does everything a normal phone does do not go for the iphone, however if you want a phone that is a mini computer this is the phone for you.

Personally, I prefer Android and you have a rather huge choice of handsets.

In the defence of Apple, iOS 5 will finally separate the phone (and indeed the iPad) from a computer, as Apple believes that the iPhone and iPad can in fact allow you to get rid of your computer (if you're not entering lots of data and have a computer mainly to consume data/content).

The update will come around August/September time.

Still, Apple is rather rich now so probably doesn't care. The iPad is also doing great, when all other tablets aren't. Presumably Apple can convince Apple users that they need one. Everyone else can say 'erm, why would I want one?'.

Remember the iPad 1 which couldn't multitask and the very quick release of the iPad 2 which can? Makes one suspicious that it was deliberate blocking of firmware which was lifted for the 2. That should really have been lifted as an update.

Apple's marketing is excellent, no question. They turn an overpriced, restricted, locked down product into a top seller.
