Phone battery failing is just as much of an issue with e-tickets

E tickets require you to know exactly which journey you are planning to do on advance. The advantage of GPS or contactless systems is that you can be spontaneous and take whatever train comes next and go somewhere random, or not need to know if you need a single or return. (When the office was a thing I would someone get a left home so wouldn't know if I needed a single or return, so a system like this would have been handy then).

E-ticket does not mean an Advance ticket and anyway the post was about a battery failure on a phone causing issues if travelling using GPS tracking.

By advance ticket I was meaning knowing whether you needed a single or return, and which stations you are using. Could any traditional walk-up or advance ticket.

Battery issues and other things are a risk. I take a battery pack and charger with to help prevent that being an issue. I've not found the GPS in the ScotRail app using significantly more battery.

You don't risk a fine on the train if your phone dies and you can't listen to a podcast.

Yes, I have my phone, but I don't fret about battery life.
